CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Director, Orientation, Transition and Family Programs serves as a member of the Division of Student Life leadership team and reports to the Assistant Vice President, Student Advocacy and Support/Dean of Students is responsible. The Director is responsible for the development, planning, and implementation of high profile, dynamic, and student-centered orientation and transition programs for all new undergraduate students and their families. The Director collaborates with Student Life departments and a broad array of Academic Affairs administrative units including Admissions, First Year Experience, Global Programs and Services, the College Deans to develop programs and services that provide students a seamless transition to the University and promote student engagement, success, and retention.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Division of Student Life leadership team to implement strategic initiatives and division goals to enhance the First-year Experience and student engagement for all students and families at the University.
  • Develop, plan, and implement a high profile, dynamic, and student-centered orientation program for all new undergraduate students and their families, serving over 4,000 incoming students and over 5,000 family members annually.
  • Direct the day-to-day administration of the Orientation and Transition Programs office within Student Life.
  • Directly supervise one professional staff member (Associate Director) and one salaried (Administrative Assistant III) staff member and oversee the supervision of two additional professional staff members (Assistant Director, Student Orientation and Assistant Director, Parent and Family Engagement).
  • Create strategic vision and priorities to advance the work of the department and support the transition and retention of new students throughout the first year; direct the implementation of short- and long-range goals and initiatives.
  • Oversee the development of departmental assessment plan to determine programmatic learning outcomes and impact of orientation and transition programs and services.
  • Develop engaging orientation schedules for first year, transfer, and international students and their families in collaboration with key stakeholders in academic life and student life. Utilize institutional and departmental assessment to direct the development of traditional orientation programs as well as transition programs for specialized populations, including transfer, commuter, veteran, and international students.
  • Direct the development and implementation of parent and family programming, including Parent and Family Weekend, family orientation and welcome events, and other initiatives to cultivate strong partnerships with families of all UD undergraduates
  • Direct the development and management of orientation registration processes in coordination with Undergraduate Admissions. Liaise with College's Assistant Deans to develop orientation schedule and capacities as well as address registration issues.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and training of a large and diverse undergraduate student leader team including Orientation Leaders, 1743 Welcome Ambassadors, and Parent and Family Leaders.
  • Direct the strategic development, implementation, and coordination of extended orientation experiences for new students in collaboration with key campus stakeholders.
  • Direct the strategic development, implementation, and coordination of 1743 Welcome Days, an extended orientation program for all new students.
  • Oversee the communication planning process as well as the management of departmental website, publications, and electronic messaging in collaboration with the Student Life Communications Director and Associate Director.
  • Oversee and manage diverse, complex annual budget of approximately $1 million. Manage fiscal strategy and conduct regular budget analysis including expenditure projections and year-end balance management.
  • Serve as a primary resource for the University with addressing parents' questions and concerns and with referring issues to the appropriate offices at the University.
  • Serve on a variety of University committees, including Campus Veterans Working Group, Enrollment Management Committee, First Year Common Reader Committee, and Student Success Coalition.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, college student personnel or related field, and at least 5-7 years student affairs or related professional work experience.
  • Prior experience in new student orientation/first-year experience programs required
  • Ability to achieve goals; establish unit priorities; develop, plan, and implement short and long-range unit goals; formulate policy and organize/manage resources; and examine and re-engineer operations and procedures.
  • Excellent program planning and implementation skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of academia to achieve results in cross-functional environment
  • Demonstrated skills in supervision including management practices and principles.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, multicultural, and LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Ability to respond to crises and emergencies and assist students and parents with their concerns.
  • Strategic planning, budget preparation and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking (presentation skills), negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
