Job Description

The College of Agricultural and Life Science’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (https://aaec.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech invites applications for an early career, non-tenured position at the rank of research assistant professor with a specialization in Data Science and its application in the social sciences. The position is a 12-month, calendar-year appointment. The anticipated start date for this position is May 10, 2023.

Appointment: The successful candidate will develop a strong applied research and Extension program that works both within and at the boundaries of data science methods and the social sciences to discover, create, and disseminate new knowledge. The candidate will work with the VT-Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) program to develop and lead independent, original research programs th​​at positively impact our communities, rural and urban, in Virginia and beyond. In addition to working closely with departmental faculty and staff, the candidate will work to increase the impact of data science use by collaborating with Virginia Cooperative Extension faculty, staff, and stakeholders through training, workshops, webinars, and action-oriented projects and programs.

The successful candidate will develop and lead independent, original research and Extension programs.
Specific duties will include:
-Conducting relevant applied research in public economics, community economics, and agricultural economics;
-Work closely with faculty, students, and specialists to develop and maintain an effective Extension program with a policy-oriented, data science focus;
-Applying for competitive grants and external funding opportunities to support the Programs’ land-grant mission;
-Actively participating in Extension priority identification, program development and implementation process
-Publishing academic journal articles, policy reports, and shorter policy briefs;
-Presenting and disseminating research results to academic, policy-making, Extension, and industry associations at federal, state, and professional venues;
-Assisting in the organization and execution of the “Internships in Data Analytics in Agriculture, Community, and Rural Economics (DATA-ACRE)” summer Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) program.

The candidate's research and Extension program will, as appropriate, contribute to a broad range of units and fields represented within the department, college, and the university. These include but are not limited to the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture (CAIA) (https://caia.cals.vt.edu/), the University’s Global Change Center, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program (IGEP) in remote sensing, the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment (ISCE), and VT's Advanced Research Computing (ARC) center.

Opportunity for Advising and Teaching: At the graduate level, the individual will participate in recruiting and advising/mentoring graduate students, including serving on Master's theses and Ph.D. dissertation committees. At the undergraduate level, the individual will assist in recruiting, mentoring, and training undergraduate students in the summer DATA-ACRE internship program. There will be opportunities to teach graduate or undergraduate courses.

Required Qualifications

-Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics, Economics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Public Policy, Management Science, Sociology, Statistics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline
-Explicit research experience or coursework on the boundary between data science and policy analysis in their major field.
-Record of peer-reviewed publications or advanced working papers relevant to the position description.
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work and lead effectively in a public facing, team-based atmosphere.

Preferred Qualifications

-Proficiency in R, Stata, and/or Python modeling languages.
-Research experience using R or Python.
-Experience working with large structured and unstructured datasets.
-Cooperative Extension experience.
