The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan invites applications for an Assessment Specialist position. This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, collaborative Center with extensive partnerships on teaching and learning across U-M and beyond and a strong DEI focus. Consultants across the center are committed to promoting equity-focused and inclusive teaching in programs, workshops, consultations, and assessment.
Candidates with additional experience may be considered for the title of Assistant Director.
Who We Are
CRLT is the nation’s first teaching center. We are dedicated to the support and advancement of evidence-based and assessment-informed learning and teaching practices and the professional development of all members of the campus teaching community. CRLT is part of the Provost’s Office and partners with faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and academic leaders across U-M’s 19 schools and colleges to develop and sustain a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and creates equitable learning environments in which diverse students and instructors can excel. The University is currently embarking on the second stage of a strategic initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. CRLT is U-M’s key resource for equity-focused and inclusive teaching. An Assessment Specialist is a consultant who will work with clients to plan, conduct and/or facilitate assessment and evaluation projects focused on a range of topics (e.g., equity-focused teaching, curriculum revision, group work and active learning, grading, accreditation, among many); develop new programs to meet emerging needs; consult with individual instructors and departments about assessment and evaluation projects; conduct data analysis and write reports; and research new assessment and evaluation strategies and develop written resources to be shared with instructors. Instructors at U-M are teaching primarily in-person, but also in remote and online modalities. Likewise, we consult with instructors in multiple modalities. All CRLT consultants are provided professional development opportunities to help develop their skills and connect with a network of educational development professionals at CRLT and beyond.
- A demonstrated commitment to furthering equity, inclusion, social justice, and access in higher education
- Two or more years of experience with assessment or research strategies that might include: psychometric methods for the measurement of outcomes, the use of multivariate models to calculate variations in data, focus group facilitation, large datasets, data visualization, thematic analysis, or other quantitative and qualitative methods
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications to a wide audience
- Strong skills and knowledge base for consulting with U-M instructors from a broad range of institutional roles and disciplinary backgrounds on assessment methods and challenges, including both course-based and curriculum-level strategies
- Familiarity with literature relevant to educational assessment work, including inclusive and equitable practices
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Project management skills, including the ability to create and follow timelines, multi-task and prioritize across multiple tasks
- A completed doctorate or the equivalent. Candidates for the doctorate will be considered with an established defense date of May 2023 or earlier
- A record of successful teaching in a university or college setting
