Job Description

The Energy & Water Management Manager is an integral part of Facility Services, in the Utility Services department. This position will work closely with Project Managers, various Facility Services departments, the Office of Sustainability, and other university stakeholders to improve campus energy infrastructure, policies, procedures, programs, and efficiency to reach carbon neutrality goals.

The Energy & Water Management Manager also manages the university's energy and water resources to reduce energy consumption by benchmarking energy consumption against energy and water efficiency best practice guidelines. Oversees the collection of university consumption data to provide up-to-date information to university management. Implements conservation measures, monitors energy consumption, assesses business decisions for sustainability, and seeks out opportunities for increasing energy efficiency

Job Functions and Duties

Project Management - 40%
  • Develops, proposes, and implements approved policies, plans and programs (e.g. District energy policy, energy management plans, energy efficiency goals, etc.) for the purpose of reducing energy consumption and achieving strategic goals related to NAU climate action plan and carbon neutrality goals.
  • Identifies cost effective deep energy retrofits in infrastructure renovations.
  • Assist in design and implementation of a new control strategies.
  • Assist Project Managers in improving the energy efficiency of all projects.
  • Manage preparation of applications for APS Solutions for Business rebate program.
  • Manage and apply for other applicable energy rebates, including Energy Star.
  • Participates in oversight of NAU's Green Revolving fund for energy efficiency projects
  • Participates in plan review of construction projects for energy related items.
  • Responsible for managing departmental budget.

University Utility (Energy and Water) Consultant - 25%
  • Develops and oversees strategies to reduce energy and water consumption.
  • Leads and supports renewable energy and decarbonization efforts.
  • Assess various strategies to improve electricity, HVAC, and water efficiencies.
  • Assist with building energy audits to identify energy conservation measures.
  • Analyze buildings and operations to determine the optimum utilization of HVAC, electrical, lighting and control systems
  • Assist in promoting the participation of faculty, students and staff relative to energy conservation
  • Collaborate and engage campus community to create “Living Laboratory” opportunities for student engagement in research related to clean energy and energy efficiency projects

Technical Knowledge - 25%
  • Investigate renewable energy applications for on and off campus.
  • Conduct regular utility rate models to identify opportunities for energy and cost savings.
  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of, and draft detailed proposals for, on-campus conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy development and large off-campus renewable developments and partnerships
  • Assist the university energy committee as a member.
  • Work with the Office of Sustainability on all utility related projects.

Other duties as assigned - 5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice president of Facility Services and the Director of Utility Services.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Science, Climate Solutions, or Computer Science
  • 2-4 years working in the area of Energy Management


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Energy Manager certification or ability to be certified.
  • Master's degree in job related area
  • LEED GA certified

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $72,445. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
