Special Information

The Department of Sociology at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a Lecturer (Master's-level) or an Assistant Teaching Professor (PhD-level). This is a nine-month, non-tenure track position which involves a one academic year contract with the opportunity for renewal beyond 2022-2023 contingent upon program needs, continued availability of funding, and effective performance. The successful candidate will also work with the Bachelor of University Studies, a unique interdisciplinary program that allows students, with an advisor's assistance, to pair two minors to create their own degree.

Job Description

Successful candidates will have demonstrated commitment to teach and work with underrepresented groups, particularly to the unique populations of Northern Arizona University.

Responsibilities primarily include teaching up to four undergraduate courses across the Sociology (SOC) and related Bachelor of University Studies (BUS) curriculum each semester. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to student success and have experience or wilingess to teach in various modalities including in-person, blended learning, hyflex, and/or online. The ability to teach upper-division courses for the undergraduate BUS degree as well as both lower- and upper-division courses for the SOC degree is preferred. The opportunity to periodically teach in the Applied Sociology Master's program is also available.

Overall workload expectations also include engaging in service activities at the department, college, and/or university levels as well as the possibility of research allocation. This position also includes the potential for community engagement through internship coordination as well as collaboration with community partners.

The Sociology program's mission is “to cultivate multiple ways of understanding society in order to create purposeful futures for our students in an ever-evolving employment market by application of sociological knowledge gained through collaborative education, community engagement, and experiential learning; developing transferable skills such as research, professional writing, effective communication, inclusivity, and leadership.” This work aligns with NAU's new Elevating Excellence plan, especially the strategic priorities of “Academic Excellence,” “Student Success,” and “Community Engagement.”
