Job Description

The Department of Teaching and Learning is seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Literacy/Reading Education. This position is located on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus beginning in August 2023 and is a nine-month tenure-track faculty line, with the opportunity for summer course teaching. Candidates need to demonstrate promise of scholarly productivity, excellence in teaching diverse students, and a commitment to supporting the goals and initiatives of the University, the College of Education and the Department of Teaching and Learning.

The Department of Teaching and Learning seeks an energetic and passionate faculty member and teacher who will teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, collaborate with faculty colleagues, and advocate around issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The successful candidate wiil contribute to the development of a world-class teacher education program through purposeful and relevant research, grant activity, and publication, engaged, high quality mentoring and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, and committed and effective service to the community, department, College, University, and the profession. In addition the faculty member will be an active member of clinical partnerships, direct graduate student research and participate in quality assurance/accreditation activites to support the quality and vitality of public schools in the State of Arizona.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate (degree completed by August 2023) in literacy/reading education OR an earned doctorate in closely related field;
  • Three years' teaching experience (pre-K-8).


Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to teaching about and engaging in issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice
  • Elementary teaching experience working with students from a wide range of ages
  • A history of scholarly productivity and/or ability to develop/maintain an active research program
  • Experience teaching reading and/or reading education including various interventions and programs promoting literacy development
  • Demonstrated success in working with an inter-disciplinary team
  • Completed courses in literacy
  • Knowledge of current research related to teaching elementary (pre-K-8) reading/literacy, elementary curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Higher education experience related to preparing preservice teachers
  • Experience teaching adult learners in a range of formats (e.g., online, in-person, hybrid)
  • Experience working collaboratively with agencies, school districts, college faculty and adult learners
  • Evidence of working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds to support inclusive and equitable communities
  • Demonstrated interest in or ability to develop a research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students
  • Evidence of working with individuals from a variety of racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, national origins, disabilities, age, veteran status, religious or political beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities and expression, and other social identities that contribute to an inclusive and equitable learning/scholarly community
  • Experience garnering external funding
  • Commitment to service to the field of Literacy education and teacher education (e.g., service to national associations, service as a peer reviewer, etc.)

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Benefits

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
