Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Supervisor reports directly to the Head of Access Services and works with the department’s managerial staff to supervise and participate in the interlibrary lending, borrowing, document delivery, and information desk operations of the department. The successful candidate will directly supervise a core team of three full-time staff primarily focused on ILL, and coordinate the ILL-related work of other employees in the Access Services department. General responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Overseeing and participating in the daily operations of the Interlibrary Loan department, ensuring that productivity and service excellence expectations are met.

•Supervising core team of ILL staff members (3 FTE employees), including hiring, training, timekeeping, performance management and evaluation; promoting a positive work environment and providing growth and development opportunities for ILL staff.

•Providing guidance and direction to all Access Services staff with ILL responsibilities, including full-timer and part-timer employees. Assist in the performance management and evaluation process for employees with ILL related employees.

•Managing the development and maintenance of training and onboarding documentation for ILL staff.

•Exploring, recommending, implementing and participating in the evaluation of resource sharing technologies, initiatives and trends.

•Representing the ILL department by communicating with students, faculty and staff to clarify guidelines/practices and promote services.

•Participating in local, regional and national resource sharing communities.

•Educate and assist students, faculty, and staff in using library materials and spaces by providing high quality assistance at the Information Desk.

Position will be required to commute between the Monroe Park and MCV campuses, including the remote storage location at 500 Academic Center (Monroe Park campus). This position may also be required to work occasional evening and weekend shifts when needed for coverage.


Normal work days/hours:
Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Some flexibility with hours, to be negotiated with supervisor. Possibility of some remote work.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse student, staff, and faculty environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards:

Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, and evaluating staff performance.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Knowledge of interlibrary loan procedures and standards.

Demonstrated experience with interlibrary lending, borrowing or document delivery processes using any combination of Alma, DOCLINE, RapidILL, OCLC WorldShare ILL, Tipasa, ILLiad or similar systems.

Experience with data analysis and use of Microsoft Office Excel or Google Sheets.

Experience working in a library.

Demonstrated experience with project management.

Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Experience with and knowledge of computers and computer software including, Microsoft Office products, Google Workspace tools, and other common desktop and web applications.



Salary Range: $35,000-$48,000
