Overview

As part of a partnership between the North Carolina Central University School of Library and Information Sciences (NCCU SLIS) and Princeton University Library, this position is only open to recent graduates of the NCCU SLIS program. Graduates from 2023, 2022, and 2021 are eligible.

Reporting to the Metadata and Enterprise Operations Manager with regular, one-on-one mentoring with the Assistant University Librarian for Metadata Services, the Cataloging and Metadata Services Fellow will be a vital member of the Cataloging and Metadata Services department (CaMS). CaMS is a multidisciplinary group of talented individuals working collaboratively to support the teaching, learning, and research mission of Princeton University by engaging with bulk operations to transform metadata, assisting in the management and configuration of the Library’s library services platform (LSP), and providing access to the Library's holdings in a variety of formats and languages through the creation of bibliographic data.

As a member of the Metadata and Enterprise Operations team within CaMS, the incumbent will work collaboratively with library colleagues to transform metadata and assist in the management and configuration of the Library’s LSP. Projects may include utilizing open-source tools to transform and enhance data for better discovery of library materials. Additionally, the incumbent will engage with stakeholders to document user needs for configuration of the LSP and verify that configuration changes meet those needs.

Princeton University Library is one of the world's leading research libraries, serving a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 5 million manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images.

The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 professional and support staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities.



Responsibilities

This position will focus primarily on learning the skills and tools library IT and cataloging/metadata librarians use to support the research, teaching, and learning mission of an academic institution. This position will work extensively in Alma (library services platform). Throughout the two-year appointment, this position will be encouraged to explore different aspects of metadata creation and management.

  • Collaborate with the Metadata and Enterprise Operations (MEO) team and the Discovery and Access Services team (DACS) to contribute to applications for library discovery
  • Engage with stakeholders across Library units to ensure application development is meeting the needs of the Library and supporting the teaching and research mission of the University
  • Engage with stakeholders to document user needs for configuration of the library services platform (LSP)
  • Collaborate with members of the MEO team to implement configuration changes
  • Verify that configuration changes meet the identified needs of the stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the MEO team to develop project plans for bulk data transformation
  • Use software applications and tools (e.g., Ruby, MarcEdit, Alma APIs and other APIs) to create and manipulate bibliographic and authority data
  • Maintain an active professional presence in library IT, cataloging, and metadata communities through participating in professional organizations, attending meetings and conferences, and ensuring professional skills and knowledge are up to date with the latest trends and best practices in the areas of library system administration and bulk transformation of data


  • Qualifications

  • Library or Information Science degree from the NCCU SLIS program. Graduates from 2023, 2022, and 2021 are eligible. Degree must be completed before June 12, 2023 start date.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a collegial, team environment
  • Willingness to learn new technologies
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or interest in, metadata and metadata content standards and tools (e.g., MARC)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or interest in, software administration and development
  • Motivation to learn and improve
  • Familiarity with software/systems used for resource description (e.g., Ex Libris Voyager and/or Alma, and OCLC Record Manager or Connexion)
  • Knowledge of recent developments and emerging trends in cataloging, including inclusive metadata and linked data
