Description

The Department of Art and Art History at DePauw University invites applications for the Hampton and Esther Boswell Distinguished University Professor in Design Studies for a one-year appointment beginning in August of 2023 at a rank commensurate with current position. An additional one or two years are possible upon mutual agreement of the successful candidate and the University.

A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential. We are especially seeking applications from those whose practice and approach will support and enrich our studio art and art history programs, including the participation in department-wide critiques of senior capstone research and artwork. Candidates must have significant experience with emerging technologies and how these technologies impact creative practice.

DePauw's Gold and Bold 2027 Strategic Plan includes launching a new school that focuses on Creative practice and a School of Business and Leadership. To help us launch these schools, we seek a cohort of faculty with experience at a range of institutions, including international institutions, HBCUs and HSIs. We further seek candidates who bring diverse perspectives and who can integrate traditional liberal arts approaches (e.g., critical thinking; ethical reasoning; connecting disciplines to domestic issues of diversity, equity and inclusion as well as to global perspectives; interdisciplinarity; written and oral communication) into their courses. Contributions may be made through inclusive pedagogies, inclusive syllabi, and/or through contributions to interdisciplinary programs that diversify DePauw’s curriculum (e.g., Africana Studies, Asian Studies, Hispanic Studies, Global Health, Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies). A complete list of academic programs is available here . The Design Studies major will be launched in fall of 2023 as the first new area of study associated with The Creative School, which launches in the summer of 2024.

The Hampton and Esther Boswell Distinguished University Professorship was established with a gift from Thomas W. Boswell ’66 and Cheryl K. Boswell, in memory of Mr. Boswell’s parents.

Position responsibilities:

Teaching assignment is four courses per year which includes the responsibility for the design studio space and related equipment. Additionally, the Boswell Distinguished University Professor is supported by special funding and the selected candidate will be expected to use these funds to organize special projects, symposia, workshops, or other activities that will engage our academic community in issues central to design.

Master of Fine Art (MFA in design), Master of Design (MDes), Master of Art and Design (MAD), Master of Graphic Design (MGraph), or related field with evidence of ability to teach the practice and theoretical underpinnings of design required.
