Position Summary
The New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute ( NMFWRI ),
which is located at New Mexico Highlands University, is a statewide effort that engages government agencies, academic and research institutions, land managers, and the interested public in the areas of forest and watershed management. We work with agencies and stakeholders at all levels!
The position is responsible for supporting crews carrying out NMFWRI’s ecological monitoring and restoration activities on public and private lands throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. This position will be filled only if adequate funding is available. Pay is commensurate with experience and degree.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist monitoring technicians, crew logistics, and program manager in achieving the goals of the monitoring program.
- Perform computer entry of field data including using Excel, FFI, and other protocols with attention to detail.
- Prepare Emergency Action Plans and other materials to support fieldwork.
- Maintain quality control and quality assurance of entered field data.
- Assist in generating summary reports and analysis of field and vegetation treatment data.
- Perform field mapping of project sites using Global Positioning System and Geographic Information Systems technologies.
- Assist in the maintenance and organization of files, photos, documents, office resources, and field equipment, including equipment inventory and coordinating purchases for fieldwork.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and inventory of NMFWRI equipment, including basic vehicle maintenance.
- Coordinate with NMFWRI staff and stakeholders to conduct and participate in training related to forest measurement, treatment, and analysis techniques.
- Assist NMFWRI staff in development and publication of training guides, manuals, and other technical support materials.
- Assist with the NMFWRI herbarium, technical literature, and equipment libraries including collection of samples, identification, equipment inventory, and providing managed access and training to professional and student partners.
- Maintain regular attendance and clear communication with supervisors and colleagues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- EDUCATION : Completion of a high school diploma or GED
- EDUCATION : Completion of college-level coursework in topic such as forestry, botany, water resources, soils, GIS, pests, wildland fire, natural resource management and other related topics.
- EXPERIENCE : Familiarity with forest & watershed ecology, restoration, and monitoring methods and protocols.
- Have an interest in forestry, natural resource management, outdoor recreation, and/or ecological restoration
- Be a team player with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, a positive
- attitude, and good self-care
- Be willing to work early mornings and long days; be willing to work in an office; be willing to work on a flexible schedule as needed to meet deadlines
- EDUCATION : Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource field
- EXPERIENCE : Previous work experience with NMFWRI or other SWERI monitoring crew
- EXPERIENCE : Previous work experience providing quality control for collected field data, including troubleshooting based on results to identify and correct error sources
- EXPERIENCE : Demonstrated ability to produce technical reports
- EXPERIENCE : Delivering technical training, including on monitoring protocols and field safety.
Maintain a valid drivers license and complete a defensive driving certificate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with forest and ecological measurement and techniques
- Familiarity with safety protocols
- Familiar with equipment and vehicle maintenance and field repair
- Knowledge of basic forestry and ecological science concepts
- Knowledge of plant ID and particularly in the range of southwest vegetation types.
- Effective time management and ability to achieve goals and independently undertake tasks with minimum of direct supervision.
- Ability to work as a member of team with diverse skills and backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in written form.
