Description

The School of Technology and Innovation is looking for a full time (10-month) instructor or ranked faculty member to teach in the Extended Reality (XR) program and to collaborate with the iEX Center, which engages in XR research and design. The program and the center are located in the College of Business (COB) at Husson University. The faculty member in the School of Technology and innovation (SoTI) is expected to adhere to the Husson University Faculty Handbook policies for promotion and ranked faculty for multiple-year contract review. The XR faculty member will teach assigned courses specific to their area of expertise plus those required by the curriculum. In addition, faculty members are expected to fulfill limited responsibilities in advising, scholarship and community service. Participation in evaluative processes and SoTI and COB activities is required and an expectation of all faculty. Annual individualized goals and objectives for an annual Professional Development and will be reviewed with the Chair and/or Dean as part of the annual performance reviews and the promotion. Ranked faculty will have additional requirements related to a Scholarship Plan and the multiple year contract process.

Examples of Duties

Teaching (approximately 75% of overall workload)

This position carries a course load of 18 credits annually (typically 3 courses per fall/spring semester). Teaching duties include development of educational materials and outcomes, engaging in personal pedagogical development and attention to performance evaluations. For example, instructors must be able to:
  • Break down complex steps in a way that beginner students can understand.
  • Inspect students' work and assign a grade based on completion of requirements.
  • Assist students individually as needed
  • Develop lectures and or videos that describe and demonstrate XR development principles


iEX Center Projects (approximately 25% of overall workload)
  • Develop software to support XR initiatives across a variety of design and development applications
  • Research new tools, methods, or applications of XR technologies
  • Architect, develop, deploy, test and maintain features for XR applications
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders to understand their requirements
  • Attend team meetings to collaborate with a variety of students, faculty and outside contractors
  • Work with CAD and 3D modeling design teams
  • Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable code in conjunction with faculty, students and outside contractors.
  • Communicate clearly in code and in technical writing
  • Debug and optimization of software
  • Create custom tool sets for existing AR/VR software that aid in AR and VR projects
  • Work with XR technologist and students to deploy software to iEX Center devices


Professional Activity:

School of Technology and Innovation faculty are expected to maintain currency within their professional area of expertise

Scholarship (ranked faculty only):

Each ranked faculty member is responsible to participate in scholarly activities as defined by the Faculty Handbook by developing and executing a scholarship plan that contributes to the scientific or professional body of knowledge relevant to the faculty member's area of expertise.

Service:

School of Technology and Innovation faculty members actively participate in School and College meetings, retreats, committees, and activities (open house, XR class meetings, and/or student recruitment projects) as well as serve on at least one Faculty Forum or Institutional committee.

Student Advising:

School of Technology and Innovation faculty maintain student office hours and advise a cohort of students each year following the policies and procedures documented in the Husson Faculty Advising Manual.

Typical Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have knowledge, skills and experience delivering content to students and developing projects within the realm of Extended Reality. They will possess working knowledge of the AR hardware and software ecosystems (HoloLens and iOS). Additionally, ideal candidates will have experience with the latest developments of the VR hardware and software ecosystems (HTC and Oculus).

Proficiency with software development in at least one (preferably multiple) of the following:
  • Unity/C#
  • Unreal/C++
  • Android/Java
  • WebXR/Javascript
  • iOS/Objective C
  • OpenXR
  • Other qualifying proficiency with 3D programming for interactive graphics or gaming

Proficiency utilizing at least one (preferably multiple) of the following:
  • Virtual Reality Headsets (HTC/Oculus)
  • Augmented Reality Headsets (Hololens)
  • Motion Capture Suits
  • Haptic Devices
  • Virtual Production Systems
  • Augmented Reality Projection Systems

Additional Required Skills:
  • Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office), skills with specialized educational software preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Organizational skills to enhance responsiveness to program demands/deadlines.
  • Administrative skills, including word processing, scheduling, event planning, and data entry/monitoring.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.


Experience
  • 3+ years experience developing software for XR (AR/VR) or related technologies


Education
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Extended Reality, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field required
  • Functional XR education, experience, skills and/or professional certifications are highly valued
