The Opportunity

Clemson University's College of Education, which includes the Eugene T. Moore School, is a transformative catalyst for education in South Carolina and our nation. It is actively engaged with schools and communities throughout the state, with special attention to improve educational outcomes in our most marginalized communities. We seek an innovative Dean to join our efforts. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the dean will be expected to provide collaborative leadership and administrative oversight for the strategic and progressive development of the college's research, teaching, service, and community engagement.

A successful candidate for dean will embrace the challenges and opportunities to provide strong programs in one of the premier colleges of Clemson University, a highly ranked land grant university. The dean will possess the skills, leadership, and entrepreneurial vision to advance the goals in the University's strategic plan and be a strong leader with broad experiences in diverse educational contexts. Evidence of vision and impact is sought across the following: P-20 public education and higher education; legislative advocacy; fundraising and marketing; and collaborative relationships with varied stake holder groups and diverse populations. We seek an innovative systems thinker with demonstrated success in collaboratively developing program policy and implementing a mission of systemic change for maximum impact.

In addition to the conventional job functions described below, the dean will be expected to:

• Design, justify, and implement a visionary strategic plan for the college that aligns with University's strategic plan;
• Acquire and manage research and teaching resources, including faculty, staff, students, and facilities, that align with University's strategic plan;
• Dedicate significant time to philanthropic activities for the college in order to yield new resources and opportunities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college. The dean holds tenured faculty rank and provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to help formulate and implement educational policies while serving as the collegiate faculty's agent in the execution of such policies. The dean serves as the principal internal and external spokesperson for the college as well as for its mission of promoting all areas associated with this college. Performance in office is reviewed at regular intervals by the Provost per the Clemson University Faculty Manual. The Dean will be responsible for:

• Fiduciary decisions: manage the budget and other resources;
• Departmental Administration: appoint department chairs and college administrators, and regularly review the performance of chairs and administrators in concert with the Provost as outlined in the faculty manual;
• Personnel: hiring; establish job titles and salaries; make decisions and review policies regarding renewal, tenure, promotion, and dismissal; authorize faculty leave; conduct annual faculty evaluations; promote departmental mentoring and development opportunities, and support professional development of faculty and staff;
• Educational Leadership: provide leadership and vision for academic programs, considering innovation, cost effectiveness, fidelity to standards, and accreditation; establish and maintain high academic standards for both academic programs and general education courses; ensure effective student quality, recruitment, and retention;
• Endowment and Outreach: continue to build, enhance and sustain an active fundraising and stewardship program; participate in various councils, commissions, and committees as set forth in university policy; represent the college within state and national boards and organizations, and other appropriate groups;
• College Governance: participate in shared governance, create ad hoc committees of the collegiate faculty; hear faculty grievances; promote academic freedom and responsibility; ensure that the college provides a diverse, opportunity- and perspective-rich environment;
• Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging: champion diversity, inclusivity, and belonging among students, faculty and staff;
• Engagement: Effectively demonstrate a commitment to Clemson Values and the university's strategic plan and engage the college in the campus, state, national and global communities.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Clemson University is a selective, public, Carnegie R1 research university in a college-town setting. Established in 1899 through the will of the founder, Thomas Green Clemson, the university is located on a 20,000-acre campus in Upstate South Carolina in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along Lake Hartwell.

The University provides bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in more than 100 majors through seven academic colleges: Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences; Business; Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences; Education; and Science. ABOUT THE CITY OF CLEMSON

Clemson is a city of approximately 18,800 year-round residents located in Pickens County, South Carolina. The area, located in the northwest corner of the state in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, includes Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee, large man-made lakes with great fishing, swimming and boating. Clemson enjoys a moderate temperature year-round with average temperatures in January of 30-50F and in August of 69-90F. Clemson is a short 40-minute drive from downtown Greenville, an hour and a half from Asheville, NC, and two hours from both Atlanta and Charlotte.

The city of Clemson operates with the Clemson Police Department, Clemson University Fire Department and Pickens County EMS, for public safety needs. All departments are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Clemson Area Transit offers free transportation (known as the CAT bus) to all riders. The city is also served by Amtrak on the Crescent route. The closest major airport is Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, located a 45-minute drive away.

The school district is Pickens County. Children living in the city of Clemson attend Clemson Elementary School, RC Edwards Middle School and Daniel High School. Residents also enjoy access to the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, the Clemson University Experimental Forest, the 18-hole Walker Golf Course, the South Carolina Botanical Garden, and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum from the Clemson University campus. In addition, the University has 19 NCAA teams and numerous intramural and club sports.

Downtown Greenville offers a thriving entertainment, dining and cultural scene, the Swamp Rabbit bike trail, the Peace Center for Performing Arts, and is home to the Greenville Drive, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C., are within two hours' driving distance from Clemson, while outdoors enthusiasts can be in the mountains of North Carolina in an hour or enjoy hiking, fishing, camping and more at one of several South Carolina state parks within a 45-minute drive of Clemson.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for this position are a terminal degree and a distinguished record of achievements that would merit an appointment as professor with tenure in an academic department in the college, and an excellent record of academic leadership, administrative experience, and responsibilities.

The successful candidate for dean will demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship, outstanding capacity to communicate with multiple constituencies, provide leadership for the college's broad spectrum of academic activities, and develop an engaging vision for the future of the college. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated record of recruiting and retaining faculty; a commitment to the principles and practices of shared governance; a strong commitment to diversity; strong fiscal and personnel management skills; an ability to enhance research; demonstrated success in obtaining philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and corporations, and/or show a genuine enthusiasm to engage in such fundraising; and the skills to steward such philanthropic support.
