Job Description Summary
The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine, as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases. GTP is a complex R&D organization consisting of research laboratories supported by multiple core functions which provide internal capacity to perform gene transfer studies from basic research through Phase 1 proof-of-concept human trials.
The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the "go-to" organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.
Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon funding.
Job Description
Our Vector Core is a state-of-the-art facility which provides vector-related materials and services in support of basic and translational research worldwide, producing vectors in support of IND-enabling research, conduct GLP assays, oversee CMO's in vector production and is expanding to conduct state-of-the art process development.
Due to the Gene Therapy Program's continued growth, we seek a Senior Director of Bioassay.
As a Senior Director Biossay you will report to the Executive Director of Analytical Science and Technology (AS&T) and partner with AS&T's analytical and quality control leaders to grow the organization and meet analytical deliverables. The role of the Senior Director will be leading a high-performing Bioassay team to develop phase-appropriate potency and immunoassay for various AAV therapeutic programs. You will develop potency assay strategies and ensure a successful method transfer to internal and external quality control organizations. You will participate on program teams and collaborate cross-functionally with project management, regulatory, MS&T, and QA. You will set clear goals, foster a positive environment, and manage the performance of your direct reports. You will be expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of GxP, including good documentation practices (GDP), good laboratory practices (GLP), and good manufacturing practices (GMP) as well as an understanding of regulatory guidances and requirements.
Successful candidates will have experience developing potency and immunoassay and transferring methods to QC with managerial roles. In addition, a strong understanding of GxP and regulatory guidelines and excellent written and oral communication skills are crucial.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or related
discipline and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination
of education and experience required. PhD preferred.
- 15 years of industry experience and strong technical background
in cell biology, molecular biology, or virology-related areas
preferred.
- Proven leadership, organizational and management skills to
coordinate cross functional decision making with executive
leadership.
- Ability to comprehend technical information related to
analytical methods, processes, and regulatory
expectations.
- Expertise in potency assay development, transfer, and
qualification for protein therapeutics or cell and gene therapy
areas for early-phase to late phase programs. Commercial experience
is a plus.
- Experience drafting protocols and technical reports and
authoring regulatory filings and responses.
- Understanding and familiarity with FDA, EMA, MHRA, ICH and
other international regulatory requirements, guidelines, and
recommendations for analytical methods and quality system including
good manufacturing, laboratory, and data integrity
practices.
- Experience with statistical analysis of analytical data and
stability studies preferred.
- Cross-functional, hands-on experience at a small
biotech/biopharma company.
