About the Position:

The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) works with other units throughout campus to seek external support for faculty research, scholarship, creative activity and institutional projects that support the educational and service mission of the university. ORSP staff assist with proposal development (Office of Research Development), proposal submission, contract negotiation (Office of Grants & Contracts), and post award support (Office of Sponsored Programs), and help to assure that research and sponsored programs are conducted in accordance with the highest ethical and regulatory standards (Office of Research Compliance). We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Research Development Specialist/Officer (Administrative Analyst/Specialist - Exempt II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The mission of Office of Research Development (ORD) is to provide faculty with the support and resources needed to produce high quality proposal submissions to external funders. The Research Development Specialist/Officer (RDS/RDO) will work to support faculty researchers within specific colleges, taking daily direction from college leadership. Under general supervision, the RDS/RDO works collaboratively and in close coordination with all units in the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects, college deans and associate deans, department chairs, college advancement teams, faculty and staff, and campus administrators to stimulate proposal-writing through pre-proposal support, including concept development, funding opportunity identification and alignment, and project design. Works as part of a central research support team, and, in addition to providing exceptional faculty support, are expected to contribute to campus-wide Research Development trainings, programs, operations and strategic planning. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving the study, analysis, evaluation, development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs plus four years of related experience. Working knowledge of and the ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations. Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty. Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques. Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skilled in the research, development, and evaluation of policies and programs. Ability to collect, evaluate, and interpret data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems, address them proactively, and develop appropriate recommendations leading to solutions. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus. Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree or a doctorate degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent work experience in a university, non-profit or research institution. Previous work experience in the field of research development. Knowledge of policies and practices employed by institutions of higher education in preparing and managing research grants and contract activities. Strong background or experience in supported research or programmatic areas. Experience in federal and private project management. Demonstrated expertise in proposal development for federal, state and foundation funders (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOD, NASA, DOE). Strong grantsmanship skills with the ability to review, critique and edit grant proposals, as well as provide constructive feedback on proposal to faculty applicants. Knowledgeable of COS Pivot or other Funding Opportunity databases to help identify and find external funding opportunities. Ability to manage concurrent priorities effectively and efficiently. Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and collegially in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to develop systems and processes to facilitate a high volume of successful proposal submissions and awards.
