BASIC FUNCTION:

The successful candidate will be well-rounded, having considerable experience in both instruction and general counseling. Familiarity with the Guided Pathways framework and counseling's role is expected. It is preferred that the successful candidate is proficient in counseling and advising students in the areas of career, transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and approved programs of study. This position may include counseling duties related to the Career or Transfer centers, Onboarding, Outreach, Veterans services, Puente, Umoja, and/or any other special populations within the college. It may include evening assignments, recruitment, class preparation and instruction, high school liaison responsibilities, student activities and curriculum development. May include presentation of Student Success workshops, operating in an online counseling environment, and facilitation of student success programs.


EDUCATION:
Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR the Equivalent. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions).


EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of the equivalent of one-year full time counseling experience at the collegiate level as well as the equivalent of one year of teaching experience, also at the collegiate level, are required. Knowledge and experience in teaching guidance courses is required. Experience with online teaching and online counseling is desirable.


Experience working with special populations is desirable. Recent experience working with African American, Latinx/Hispanic and other racially, ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom or as an advisor is desired. Demonstrated understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes is desired. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity and equity gaps in the classroom, as well as experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching is preferred.


The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and practices for engaging our diverse student population in addition to having the ability to teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and fulfill the duties of a full-time counseling faculty member in a shared governance environment.

Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.


Preferred Qualifications
Recent experience working with historically underserved students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education.

Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (E.C. 87360a).


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, which includes education, transfer, and career counseling to a diverse community college student population; providing support services to students at risk; development of student education plans, assisting students with the transfer process; recruitment and outreach activities; instruction and class preparation; committee work; program and curriculum development, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.

2. The instructional assignment will include lecture and/or laboratory classes in the discipline.

3. Other responsibilities may include developing career seminars and classes; transfer and study skills workshops; evaluating and recommending appropriate career instruments, including computer software; collaborative activities within department and other disciplines; developing a comprehensive career decision-making process for use with undecided students.

4. All faculty members are expected to maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

5. Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members. All faculty will participate in outcomes assessment work.

6. Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling and other matters are also expected of all Counseling faculty.

7. Counseling is a profession grounded in service with teamwork at the core. The successful candidate will uphold high standards of professionalism and teamwork as well as maintaining ethical standards appropriate to the position.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintain broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, appropriate professional activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
