The Communications Manager works as a part of the Global Engagement and Communications Office (GECO) to contribute to our external relations and communications campaigns, including those for development/fundraising, global projects and brand enhancement.

The Communications Manager works collaboratively with our country-based and HQ communications teams as a core contributor to the development of communications and marketing strategies, aimed at promoting programmatic successes across multiple platforms for multiple countries and audiences.

This position will manage key communications and marketing projects, providing catalytic, creative ideas, skilled construction of products, and thoughtful dissemination to Jhpiego's core audiences. The incumbent candidate will demonstrate a wide array of creative skills a firm background in writing and storytelling, an eye for design, an ability to construct multimedia, digital communications products on platforms such as WordPress, Mailchimp, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and other skills that help us extend our brand through modern communications and marketing efforts.

This position will support and deepen shared perspective of Jhpiego's mission, success and resources of US government-funded global programs as well as technical expertise.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Communications:

  • Acts as a key partner to Country offices to determine needs, priorities and approaches to conceptualize, create and deliver creative concepts and stories demonstrating and deepening the shared perspective of programmatic successes, technical expertise and innovations.
  • Deploys stories across a range of platforms, from websites to email to social media, with a focus on building unique, compelling content fully adapted to each individual platform
  • Develops plans and provides input to strategic communications activities for department or global programs
  • Generates and recommends original, creative approaches and content to communicate and promote stories
  • Identifies opportunities for improved alignment of communications approaches, plans and processes with broader program strategies and advises on new plans and approaches for the dissemination of stories, communications that further enhance quality within the context of the broader program
  • Considers the operational context of multiple communications platforms, understands their requirements for work, and modifies approaches and content as needed to fit
  • Solicits content from across the organization that enables the team to tell new, varied and compelling stories of Jhpiego's success
  • Updates web page content and layout using a CMS such as WordPress
  • Conducts quality assurance on creative deliverables, identifying and adapting content to meet shifts in needs or priorities i.e. country office requirements, changes to operational context on various platforms, integration of new content
  • Represents the department and/or the organization at professional meetings and conferences, as appropriate
  • Engages, manages and influences cross-functional partners to drive the execution and delivery of communications strategies in support of Jhpiego's strategic objectives
  • Demonstrates highest standard in quality of work, creativity and innovation


Multimedia:
  • Partners with Management and Senior Management Teams to lead and assist in the creative direction of campaigns
  • Identifies, sources and utilizes multimedia assets required to tell a compelling story
  • Works on multimedia projects, and is proficient in audio and video editing to be able to produce podcasts and short, timely video clips for social media, as well as repackage video clips from country offices into video blogs, social media posts or narrative mini-documentaries.

Marketing:

  • Identifies target audiences and develops plans to enhance, broaden and inform the build out of communications that reflect needs of the program across multiple platforms i.e. WordPress, Google and other social platforms
  • Promotes and enhances Jhpiego's brand across platforms and countries
  • Contributes to and/or leads key social media campaigns throughout the year global health advocacy days, fundraising moments, and more.
  • Assists in social media posting, management and advertising
  • Deploys paid advertising campaigns across Google and social products


Training:
  • Provides advice and guidance on communications processes and procedures to Country and Technical teams to support and drive them towards achieving key communications milestones including capacity-building as needed to empower teams to operate independently
  • Supports and provides training to staff on storytelling in the digital age

Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong project management skills and ability to work in diverse, collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with federal government and related agency programs and experience in tactical and strategic communications, event planning, public relations and media outreach
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design software
  • Proficient in working with content management systems, such as WordPress
  • Proficient posting across social media platforms, including on advertising systems
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work with both scientific/technical and non-technical materials
  • Self-motivator who looks for opportunities to creatively expand/upgrade Jhpiego's communications products and web presence to drive website traffic and usage
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple partners, multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to working in multiple socioeconomic settings and with multicultural groups in a developing country environment
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Four years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years experience in communications, marketing and/or design
  • Experience video production and editing preferred
  • Experience with the Microsoft 365 suite and Share Point preferred
  • Experience with Mailchimp or a similar email marketing platform preferred
  • Experience with Blackbaud or Luminate products a plus

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
