Essential functions (job duties):

Job Purpose
Works with medical school faculty and administration to develop medical education modules and technology-enhanced blended learning experiences. Develops and maintains, structures and edits learning materials and assessment tools as well as creating and managing a system of course improvement, using faculty development as a foundation to implement new teaching and assessment methodologies. Researches active learning methods and works with faculty to integrate these methods into the curriculum. Primary contact to implement a comprehensive educational program enterprise solution that includes curriculum inventory and mapping. Work activities involve designing and implementing standard and complex design processes; serving as a facilitator and resource to internal and external groups; participating in a project team environment; and providing functional supervision to subordinate professional personnel. Functions in a lead capacity overseeing and providing specialized guidance in instructional design methodology and technology, specifically in the field of Biomedicine. Reports to Associate Dean.

Essential Functions

Creates and maintains the curriculum database; works with Directors and Administration to ensure data integrity for curriculum inventory and mapping. Manages data analysis and report generation to support data-driven decision making. Participates in comprehensive reviews of the curriculum including information from each course and clerkship for the assessment of the longitudinal curriculum for topic integration, service learning, interprofessional education, and student learning climate. Ensures all Liaison Committee for Medical Education curriculum requirements are met for accreditation purposes. Tracks modifications to curriculum across all four segments; updates data acquisition system. Oversees annual reporting and uploading to the national Association for American Medical Colleges Curriculum Inventory Database. Stays current on changes to Association for American Medical Colleges Curriculum Inventory and managing and updating any required changes to the Curriculum Inventory database. Supports and trains the teaching faculty and others in the process of curriculum mapping and reviews for undergraduate medical education for accreditation program.

Assists with curriculum development and other educational programs. Updates Banner/Course Leaf; ensures changes to course/clerkship descriptions and objectives from directors are recorded, works with Office of the Registrar and School of Medicine Records & Registration to ensure timely implementation of additions/changes.

Lead contact for vendor and C&IT for system integration. Works with School of Medicine leadership to develop roll-out timeline, implement changes to processes and protocols to implement system. Manages day-to-day workings of the educational programs enterprise solution; provides tier-one support for all users.

Plans and coordinates the design and development of anatomy, microanatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pathology computer-based instruction. Recommends instructional strategies in the development of instructional objectives, guidelines and procedures; conducts needs analysis, creates process flow chart and designs and produces computer-based instruction course modules that accomplish designated self-directed learning objectives and adhere to design specifications. Advise and assist faculty and others in the identification, operationalization, and effective use of innovative teaching and assessment strategies and, where appropriate, instructional technologies. Work one-on-one (and collectively) with Basic Science faculty and other faculty as assigned in the development and implementation of courses using instructional design best practices and instructional technology tools to continuously enhance the learning environment. Work with Directors and Faculty to ensure consistency of content presentation across the curriculum. Work with faculty to develop/modify courses/clerkships; ensure goals and objectives meet School of Medicine Program Objectives. Assist the Program Director in the scheduling of didactics and other educational programs. Work with Faculty experts and Administrators in other Wayne State Schools/Colleges to develop joint degree programs as directed by Administration.

In collaboration with Medical Education Support Group, evaluates and recommends selection of appropriate instructional technologies and instructional approaches, to meet current and emerging curricular needs, for the design and development of instructional materials. Collaborates and consults with faculty and administration on the effective use of online resources, instructional software and systems and multimedia technologies to enhance online education, flipped classroom and blended learning experiences. Provides support for integrating the audience response system (currently, iClicker) into educational activities. Provides one-on-one and group level support to all faculty in the use of teaching technology (Learning Management System, iClicker, etc.).

Recruits and coordinates facilitators and co-facilitators; tracks time contribution to the assigned small group and other applied learning sessions. Works with assigned faculty to develop Problem Based Learning. Distributes related materials, arranges preparation meetings and Problem Based Learning sessions, updates Outlook and Canvas calendars, and assists in Problem Based Learning survey analysis. Works with Problem Based Learning Director to ensure consistency of learning process and objectives across the curriculum.

Leads in-house trainer for all aspects of the educational system. Proactively engages faculty to recommend and assist in use of interactive e-learning software to create new learning modules. Collaborates with faculty to turn their work on educational innovations and results into educational scholarship.

Stay up-to-date with trends in medical education (competency-based, etc.); advocates for changes appropriate for our curriculum. Manages interactive review sessions for students; runs technology, works with faculty to develop review materials; analyzes student participation and response data.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Master's degree
Requires a Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education or a related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
Requires 5 or more years of curriculum development experience.
