This part-time ( 49 %, 19.5 hours per week) assignment, 10-months per year Adaptive Physical Education Program Associate in the Stroke & Disability Learning Center (SDLC) , u nder general supervision, provides assistance and adaptive physical education supportive services to students of varying ages with a variety of physical, mental and emotional disabilities; ensures the safety of students in gymnasium and swimming pool environments; and performs related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Works with and provides instructional assistance to disabled students in a variety of adaptive physical education classes and activities such as weight training, swimming, adaptive dance, adaptive chair aerobics, adaptive sports including tennis, bowling and adaptive yoga; assists students requiring help in walking, getting on and off equipment, in and out of wheelchairs and in and out of the pool; works with other program staff to perform two-person transfers when needed; supervises, monitors and ensures the safe use of equipment and facilities by disabled students.
• Makes recommendations to faculty and works with students to develop and modify individual exercise program plans to achieve their goals; adapts exercises, sports activities and uses of equipment to the abilities, limitations and preferences of individual disabled students; explains and demonstrates proper techniques, mechanics, rules, safety practices and etiquette applicable to the sport or activity in clear and understandable terms for individual students; sets up classrooms and lays out equipment required for specific classes and specific students; provides one-on-one training and instruction when needed.
• Monitors activities to identify and diffuse behavioral issues; monitors student behaviors when classes and activities are held out in the community; ensures students have required transportation and follows up with paratransit services to resolve problems; as a Mandated Reporter, stays observant for potential student welfare issues and works with their superior to prepare reports to appropriate agencies in the event problems are identified.
• Prepares and maintains a variety of student records; prepares a variety of program and student reports as requested.
• Maintains a clean, sanitary and secure learning environment; installs, maintains and services sports and exercise equipment, materials and supplies; refers facilities maintenance and repair needs to FPPO for action.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

• Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff; or an equivalent combin­ation of training and experience AND
• Completion of two (2) years of college coursework in physical education, physical therapy, motor skill development or adaptive educa­tion, AND
• Two (2) years of experience in adult adaptive physical education programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

• Principles, theories, practices, methods, equipment and procedures used in adaptive exercise and fitness programs and activities.
• Proper techniques, mechanics, rules, safety practices and etiquette applicable to specific sports or exercise activities.
• Effective instructional techniques suitable for individuals with a range of physical and other disabilities.
• Basic principles of learning and learning styles and limitations associated with various types of disabilities.
• The Americans with Disabilities Act and other local, state and federal laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to providing accommodations and support to students with disabilities.
• Health and safety practices related to adaptive exercise and fitness for individuals with disabilities including safely lifting and transfer techniques.
• Principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Community services available to individuals with disabilities, including paratransit services.

Skills and Abilities to:

• Explain and apply instructional methods and procedures in a manner that can be understood by individuals with a wide variety of physical and communication disabilities and cognitive deficits.
• Counsel and advise disabled students regarding safety and injury prevention.
• Convey understanding and empathy for students’ learning issues and challenges.
• Safely transfer students in wheelchairs and with other mobility impairments.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Operate a computer and use standard business software.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Uphold the District’s mission, values and objectives including equity and Guided Pathways.
• Support an inclusive work environment that fosters diversity, respect and engagement.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• A valid California driver’s license or ability to access and use alternative transportation.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and the ability to maintain such during the course of employment is required.

Additional Information

Starting Salary Range: $25.23 to $29.21 per hour; plus 5% annual increases up to 7, maximum initial salary step placement on the classified salary schedule is step 4.

Part-time ( 49 %, 19.5 hours per week) assignment, 10 months per year. Monday through Thursday, with the schedule of:

Monday: 9am - 3pm (30min lunch break @ 12:30pm)
Tuesday: 9am - 3pm (30min lunch break @ 12:30pm)
Wednesday: 9am - 12:30pm
Thursday: 9am - 2:00pm (staff meeting @ 12:30pm)
