Professional Academic Advisor: Online Learning



FLCC is looking for an academic professional who has a desire to change students' lives in the online learning space.

The Professional Academic Advisor: Online Learning is primarily responsible for working with a designated caseload of online students enrolled in a variety of programs. The Professional Academic Advisor is responsible for working with these students at their initial registration at the College, informing students of academic support services and strategies available, tracking academic progress, and explaining options to students who are struggling. The Professional Advisor: Online Learning is the main contact point for our online students. Daily meetings with students regarding technical issues, instructor issues, advising questions, and general student support will be required. This position works closely with the Instructional Design staff in designing exemplary student experiences for our online population.

Qualifications:

Educational Background : Bachelor of Art or Science degree required in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field. Master’s degree in related fields mentioned preferred.

Experience : Minimum of four years of professional experience in academic advising, student support, or working with students required, preferably in a community college setting. Familiarity with computerized student information systems is required, Ellucian preferred.

Special Skills : Understanding the College’s learning management system and helping students navigate the platform with the ability to identify academic needs and offer solutions with professional oral and written communications skills, and human relations skills. Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records required. Ability to work respectfully with confidential information and make referrals as appropriate. MS Office and database management skills are required.

Specific Responsibilities :
  • Execute a communication plan to facilitate student registration, academic success, and building community for students taking online courses. Continuously update web resources to support success in online student programs.
  • Implement online orientation events for students using the learning management system.
  • Maintain a social presence in the learning management system to increase retention in online courses and programs. Work with the AVP to implement degree completion programs and adult learning support programs.
  • Provide support for students using third-party online software in their online classes.
  • Provide secondary technical support for students in both online and face-to-face courses that utilize the learning management system.
  • Provide academic advisement to students about academic requirements and selection of courses.
  • Maintain accurate records on each advisee in appropriate systems; evaluate students after each semester to determine status and academic recovery plans (if appropriate)
    • Ensure that students are aware of the College’s early alert system (Starfish)
    • Maintain systematic and frequent contact with students in LMS.
    • Work collaboratively with faculty and other advisors to support students.
    • Perform and interpret degree audits (e.g., working knowledge of transfer credits, etc.).
    • Possess basic knowledge of financial aid processes, guidelines (SAP), and programs.
    • Implement online orientation events for students using the learning management system.
    • Maintain a social presence in the learning management system to increase retention in online courses and programs. Work with the AVP to implement degree completion programs and adult learning support programs.
    • Provide support for students using third-party online software in their online classes.
    • Provide secondary technical support for students in both online and face-to-face courses that utilize the learning management system.
    • Make referrals as necessary to career and transfer services, Academic Success and Access Programs (including Disability Services), Community Standards and Counseling, and other existing support services and offices.
    • Understand the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
    • Disseminate information on institutional policies and procedures.
    • Work collaboratively within Student Affairs to engage students and encourage participation in both curricular and co-curricular activities.
    • Create accessible and welcoming learning environments that are supportive and inclusive of all students, taking into account the diverse and intersecting identities and backgrounds that many of those students may hold or claim. Including but not limited to nontraditional and first-generation students, students with disabilities, students of color, students from underrepresented groups, international students, LGBTQ+ students, religion, socioeconomic status, and gender.
    • Implement teaching and learning practices that are known to create more equitable achievement and engagement among diverse populations of students (especially those who are underrepresented in particular fields or disciplines).

  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
  • Will work primarily at the Canandaigua campus, and may travel to the campus centers at scheduled times.
  • The set work schedule varies daily and includes scheduled daytime, evening, and weekend hours at 37.5 hours a week.
