FACULTY POSITION IN SOCIOLOGY

Truman State University

 

Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a non-tenure track faculty position in Sociology to begin August 2023.

Responsibilities:  Provide classroom instruction in lower and upper division courses including research methods or sociological theory across integrated levels of our curriculum; fulfill additional faculty duties; contribute to inclusive excellence both in the department and across campus; participate in departmental activities including student recruitment; and perform other regular service to the University and community.

Required Qualifications:  Requires a Ph.D. in Sociology; ABD status (with Masters in Sociology) will be considered with Ph.D. completion scheduled by December 2023.

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • academic qualifications,
  • compatibility with department needs,
  • teaching background or the potential for teaching introductory sociology, a research design/ data analysis and report writing sequence, sociological theory, social problems, structured inequalities, global sociology, and advanced seminars,
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness, including potential for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in undergraduates,
  • evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, including but not limited to interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, experience supporting diversity and inclusion,
  • potential to contribute to interdisciplinary majors or minors such as Social Issues Advocacy, African and African Diaspora Studies, or Women and Gender Studies, and
  • strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation and Rank:  Rank for this position with PhD in hand is Assistant Professor and salary is $48,500; with MA and ABD status, is Instructor and salary is $43,680.  The benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.   

Program: Sociology is located in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice Studies that is part of the School of Social & Cultural Studies.  The department has 7 full-time faculty members and approximately 54 undergraduate Sociology/Anthropology majors and 49 minors.
