Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Drawing within the Audain Faculty of Art. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILTIES

The Drawing area at Emily Carr University focuses on developing critically engaged and contextually aware drawing-based work. Situated within the interdisciplinary Visual Arts BFA in the Audain Faculty of Art, the Drawing area fosters the development of student practice within the context of contemporary cultural production, with a strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of drawing as an expanded practice in relation to other disciplines.

 

Candidates should be able to teach Drawing at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a rigorous and committed team of Art faculty that also includes the following curriculum areas: Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Illustration, Drawing, Print Media, Sculpture + Expanded Practices, New Media + Sound Arts, Performance, Interdisciplinary Visual Art and Praxis, as well as minors in Curatorial Practices and Art + Text. Candidates should be equally fluent in contemporary drawing discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline; expertise in other disciplines is an asset. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper-level critiques, provide graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in research, and be an active member of the Emily Carr community. The successful candidate will have an active drawing-based practice, which could include working with a range of media and engaging with the broader field through various forms of dissemination. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:

 

  • MFA or equivalent graduate degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience; experience teaching at university or post-secondary level is required; experience teaching in a related subject area is preferable; intercultural competence;
  • strong communication and facilitation skills;
  • expertise in a range of drawing processes, including the ability to utilize traditional and experimental approaches;
  • knowledge and ability to teach a range of material processes and methodologies, which could include graphite, charcoal, ink, print processes, painting, non-traditional media or other media;
  • strong evidence of excellence in a drawing-based practice that may include hybrid and/or expanded approaches intersecting with other areas such as: sculpture, site-specificity and installation, new media, performance, socially-engaged, community based and/or activist work, public art, collaboration, and other areas of enquiry;

 

  • demonstrated engagement with drawing in the broader field, such as the global contemporary art context, engagement with diverse Indigenous and cultural perspectives, and intersectional approaches to art-making and pedagogy;

 

Expertise in the following areas will be considered an asset:

  • the ability to integrate new tools, media and methods into drawing curriculum, including new and emerging technologies; ecological, sustainable approaches and methods.

  • a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a statement of pedagogy and up to 3 samples of syllabi, assignments, and evidence of teaching effectiveness; a statement of research; a personal statement on the candidate’s contributions to diversity, regardless of personal characteristics, describing any professional skills, community experience, or willingness to engage in activities that advance institutional diversity and equity in teaching, research, and service; supporting materials including an online portfolio of recent work (20 images or a link to a website); and the names and contact information of three referees.
