Assistant Dean or Director of Residence Life and Community Standards

 

Reports to: Dean of Student Affairs

Position Type: Full-time,12 months, Exempt

Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000

 

Position Overview

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at Menlo College is looking for an experienced, resourceful, innovative, and dedicated professional to provide oversight of the student residential experience. Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean or Director of Residence Life and Community Standards has primary responsibility for administrative management and oversight of residential life, housing, and community standards. This position provides vision, leadership and strategic direction for the area and works collaboratively with OSA staff and other campus departments to provide students with a safe on-campus living environment that cultivates community, facilitates learning, promotes academic success, and fosters inclusivity.

 

Responsibilities

● Recruit, select, train, and supervise Undergraduate Hall Directors and Resident Assistants.

● Implement a well-balanced, educational, and socially engaging co-curricular program for resident students that supports their personal development, academic success, health and wellness, and ability to live successfully in our community.

● Serve as an integral part of OSA’s management team and assist with policy decisions, programming goals, personnel issues, and a variety of central office matters.

● Manage all housing processes (assignments and occupancy management) in the absence of the Assistant Director for Housing and Residence Life.

● Oversee and assess the Living Learning Community pilot and strategize a model for expansion.

● Identify opportunities to engage and partner with faculty and other departments on campus (e.g., Career Services) to enhance the residential experience.

● Work collaboratively with Campus Security to proactively address safety and security concerns, implement action plans, and ensure related policies are consistently enforced.

● Serve in the Administrator on Call weekly duty rotation to assist Residence Life staff and Resident Fellows during campus emergencies.

● Chair the Care Team charged with monitoring and responding to residents experiencing social, emotional and behavioral concerns, working collaboratively with OSA staff, Academic Affairs, Academic Advising, Athletics, and other campus departments when appropriate.

● Administers the student code of conduct in collaboration with the Dean of Student Affairs. Directs overall operations of the student conduct process for the College, including investigating behavioral concerns, tracking student conduct reports and coordinating the student conduct appeal process for the institution.

● Assist with the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation and signature campus events as needed.

● Opportunity to teach student success courses, depending on qualifications and need.

● Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in higher education administration, public administration, counseling, or related field preferred.

● Minimum 2-3 years of experience in Residence Life, Housing, and Student Affairs.

● Strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for Student Affairs professionals, including: student conduct; housing and residential life; and student development, engagement, and success.

● Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; and experience working with historically underrepresented students.

● Outstanding verbal, written, and public presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and all external constituencies.

● Working knowledge of Title IX regulations.

● Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office and Student Information Systems (Jenzabar preferred).

● Proficiency with outcomes assessment and continuous improvement. 

● Willingness to work evenings and weekends.

● Demonstrated success with change management or crisis management, to support planning and operations in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
