World History and Cultures Librarian

The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, flexible and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as the World History and Cultures Librarian (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). This position reports within the Library’s Collection Development and Management Program.

Responsibilities of the Position
The World History and Cultures Librarian works to build and manage collections, as well as provide liaison services such as outreach, instruction, reference, and research advisory for assigned areas within the Department of History, Department of Literature, and the Institute of Arts and Humanities.

• Implement liaison services and actively engage with faculty and students in the following areas:
-Department of History, excluding US, East Asia and Latin America history areas.
-Institute of Arts and Humanities, including European Studies, Classical Studies, Middle East Studies, Black Diaspora and African American Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, and Russian and Eastern European Studies.
-Department of Literature, specifically European languages and translations and other World Literatures as assigned.
• Serve as the primary contact for research and educational needs of assigned departments and develop and promote innovative services and resources to enhance their research, teaching, and learning.
• Work with the Collection Coordinator for Arts and Humanities and other selectors to develop and maintain collections, in all formats, of world literatures, and in the assigned subject areas. This will include managing European-based approval plans and working with foreign resource vendors.
• Collaborate with other librarians and staff on collection management related issues including cancellations, consolidations, preservation and conservation of relevant materials.
• Develop creative strategies to learn about and understand information needs and build partnerships with research and teaching faculty.
• Actively engage in outreach and two-way communications and sustain strong, consistent, and effective communication channels between the Library, the assigned departments, and affiliated programs and research units.
• Provide subject-related instruction in a variety of formats and develop, maintain, and promote subject- specific learning objects for assigned subject areas.
• Provide general reference and research assistance and serve as the primary subject specialist for research assistance in assigned departments and programs.
• Collaborate with the digital collections specialists to expand and provide support for digital humanities projects and partnerships with faculty and students.
• Provide other appropriate services and support such as serving as a resource for information on or appropriate referrals on scholarly communication, data management and preservation, copyright, and plagiarism.
