Job Description

This is a full-time, benefit eligible position that reports to the Director of Human Resources. This is an on-campus position located on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting or related field

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in business, accounting and/or financial management in a complex organization
  • Experience in payroll working with modern payroll system (e.g. Workday, PeopleSoft, ADP, Kronos, Timecard, etc.)
  • Proven ability to develop payroll processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated issue management/problem solving skills
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced payroll accounting skills
  • Experience with ERP systems
  • Advanced Excel Skills
  • Intermediate skills in other MS Office Applications
Appointment Date: The start date will be determined after acceptance of an offer and successful completion of a background check.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of payroll and serves as the direct contact for all University payroll related activities
  • Ensure bi-weekly payroll processing activities are balanced and accurate prior to submission to the State of Kansas and post to FHSU financial system
  • Process fringe benefit income and supplemental payments
  • Assist employees with direct deposit and tax withholdings
  • Modify and trouble-shoot interfaces
  • Communicate and train employees and departments on any changes being made to the payroll process or benefits
  • Review, analyze and stay current on federal, state and local tax code changes in relation to payroll reporting, taxes and benefit programs, and advise senior management on issues relative to these changes
  • Oversee all development projects related to the automated payroll system. Update system control files and other information on the payroll system to reflect accurate information for payment of employees. Work closely with Information Technology to update and maintain the payroll system and all related systems implemented by the State of Kansas
  • Run, maintain and report out on required payroll reports as directed by the Department of Administration/State of Kansas Retention requirements
  • Ensure deadlines imposed by State of Kansas, Department of Administration are met in order to ensure all payroll transactions occur as scheduled
