Assistant Director, Housing and Residence Life

 

Reports to: Assistant Dean/Director of Residence Life and Community Standards

Position Type: Full-time,12 months, Exempt

Compensation: Commensurate with experience; includes on-campus housing

Salary: $64,480

 

Position Overview

The Assistant Director for Housing and Residence Life is a full-time, live-in position that supports all housing and residence life functions provided by the Office of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director will support the Assistant Dean/Director of Residence Life and Community Standards in managing the daily operations of all room assignments, changes, cancellations, and activities. In addition the Assistant Director is responsible for updating housing database records, executing assignment processes, generating reports, and analyzing data supporting housing assignment operations. Other responsibilities include providing on-call coverage and responding to emergencies for the entire community of residential students. On-call coverage may require rotating weekly, weekend, holiday, and summer coverage and is shared across a team of on-call support staff. The Assistant Director is also expected to support the Office of Student Affairs with signature events and experiences such as Orientation, Admissions Open Houses, Oaktoberfest, Career Connect Day, and Commencement.

 

Responsibilities

Major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

● Coordinate and execute all aspects of the room selection and assignment process for roughly 700 on-campus housing spaces in the residence halls.

● Serve as a system administrator for the housing management software (i.e. Jenzabar).

● Work collaboratively with the Assistant Dean / Director for Residence Life and Community Standards to build and maintain online housing application processes and forms to provide students an easy and accessible experience via the student portal.

● Execute all aspects of room changes, withdrawals, academic or judicial removals, including updating and maintaining accurate rosters, billing, and communication.

● Manage opening and closing procedures for all residential buildings.

● Assist in the supervision and professional development of Resident Assistants and Undergraduate Hall Directors.

● Facilitate regular health and safety inspections in collaboration with in-hall staff.

● Work in partnership with facilities to maintain clean and safe residential buildings and ensure that all reported damages and maintenance issues are addressed within an appropriate time frame.

● Coordinate break and transition period housing arrangements for continuing students.

● Serve as the lead person of contact for all inquiries regarding housing assignments, room changes, and cancellation requests. 

● Coordinate housing assignments and program placement for distinct student populations (i.e. Resident Assistants, Living Learning Communities, Cluster Housing, Athletes) in collaboration with relevant campus partners.

● Consult with campus partners (i.e. Disability Services and Athletics) in regards to their housing needs in compliance with college, state, and federal policies and procedures (e.g., American with Disabilities Act, applicable Athletic Conferences).

● Review and update housing applications and contracts per term/academic year in partnership with the Assistant Dean / Director of Residence Life and Community Standards and General Counsel.

● Provide rental verification and references for current and former residents.

● Coordinate file maintenance of all documentation related to room condition and billing.

● Participate in scheduled professional staff on-call duty rotation and provide crisis intervention along with necessary follow-up after an incident, working in coordination with the Student Affairs team.

● Serve as a conduct hearing officer as needed and adjudicate alleged violations of the Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.

● Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed in various settings, both on and off campus. The position requires flexible work hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

 

Physical Requirements

Lifting, bending, and pulling equipment is required in the process of setting up or taking down equipment used for special events.

 

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in higher education administration, public administration, counseling, or related field preferred.

● Minimum 1-2 years of experience in Residence Life, Housing, and Student Affairs.

● Strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for Student Affairs professionals, including: student conduct; housing and residential life; and student development, engagement, and success.

● Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; and experience working with historically underrepresented students.

● Outstanding verbal, written, and public presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and all external constituencies.

● Working knowledge of Title IX regulations.

● Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office and Student Information Systems (Jenzabar preferred).

● Proficiency with outcomes assessment and continuous improvement.
