The University of Chicago Library seeks an innovative and forward-thinking individual for the position of Electronic Resources Metadata Analyst. Reporting to the Head of Data Management Services, the Electronic Resources Metadata Analyst will provide expertise and leadership for the comprehensive discovery and access of electronic monographs, streaming media, and integrating resources, which account for over 70% of the collections budget. The successful candidate will collaborate with e-resource stakeholders across the Library and lead the centralized batch loading and metadata transformation and enrichment activities for the e-resource bibliographic and holdings metadata maintained in the Library’s FOLIO library system platform.
Data Management Services resides in the Technical Services department. The University of Chicago Library’s Technical Services Department connects students, faculty, staff, and visiting researchers with resources and services supporting their scholarly and creative endeavors. One of five units in Technical Services, Data Management Services is responsible for the batch processing and import of acquisitions and bibliographic data; reporting on the data integrity of the catalog; implementing processes for managing the catalog data throughout its lifecycle; automating library workflows; and maintaining collection statistics.
- Lead the Library’s program for the management of e-resource bibliographic metadata.
- Analyze, standardize, and maintain processes and procedures for the batch ingest and management of bibliographic metadata for electronic resources.
- Apply expertise to evaluate, transform, and enrich metadata at scale.
- Perform complex or specialized batch cataloging and import operations, including non-routine batch manipulation of files of marc records for electronic resources, the use of OCLC APIs to select and retrieve records, and/or the batch transformation of non-MARC metadata into MARC records for loading into FOLIO.
- Collaborate with the Electronic Resources Management section and metadata specialists across the library to ensure that bibliographic and holdings metadata for electronic resources is available in a timely manner in the Library’s discovery ecosystem, including the VuFind catalog interface.
- Participate in the development of policy, both for local e-resource metadata management in practice and for future-looking and evolving metadata standards, such as BIBFRAME, by participating in Library, FOLIO, and national and international working groups.
- Contribute to the culture and operation of the Library through participation in Library committees, workgroups, and diversity initiatives.
- Contribute to the profession through engagement with colleagues across the Library, with consortial partners in the Ivy Plus Library Confederation and the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the FOLIO project community, and other peer networks.
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and advanced degree
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues and trends in working with library metadata at scale.
- Demonstrated ability to work with library metadata in batch using tools such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, Excel, APIs, and scripting languages such as Python.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication (oral and written) skills
- Experience working in an academic or research library.
- Experience working with library resources in multiple languages and non-Roman scripts.
- Experience working with open source software.
- Familiarity with OCLC suite of applications including Connexion, Record Manager, Collection Manager and their associated APIs.
- Familiarity with current and emerging metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and other cataloging standards and tools such as RDA, LCSH, LCC classification, MARC21, and Dublin Core.
- Knowledge of constructing SQL queries.
- Understanding, through experience and/or coursework, of electronic resource life cycle activities and the electronic resource ecosystem.
