Position Summary

The Director for Student Conduct reports to the Associate Dean of Students in the Division of Student Affairs. The Director is responsible for planning, implementation, evaluation and oversight of the University’s student conduct system. The Office of Student Conduct (which consists of a Director, an Associate Director, three Assistant Directors, and an Administrative Services Manager) receives all complaints regarding possible infractions of conduct regulations; schedules and facilitates all University judicial and sexual misconduct hearings; coordinates and monitors all appeals; maintains student disciplinary records; and recruits, trains, and advises the University Judiciary (student organization). This position serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, and interacts regularly with Admin Team members, Leadership Team members, students, and other stakeholders across the University. This position also interacts with UGA Police Dept., Athens Clarke Co. PD, investigators, and attorneys.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in higher education, college student affairs, or related field.

  • Completion of a terminal degree (i.e. J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D.) is highly preferred.
  • Seven (7) years full-time college student affairs or related experience.
  • Background working in the area of student conduct/judicial programs/affairs or related area.
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekend hours.

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Understanding of the role of student conduct at a large, complex institution.

Leadership, Strategic Vision & Planning
  • Provide vision and leadership to all programs and services administered by the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Supervise and evaluate one Associate Director and one Assistant Director for Investigations.
  • Plan and participate in ongoing and annual training for University faculty/staff serving on student misconduct and sexual misconduct hearing panels.
  • Support departmental, divisional, and university strategic goals and initiatives through service on various committees or task forces (i.e. Behavioral Assessment and Response Council, Sexual Assault Response Team, University System of Georgia RAC - SCO ).
  • Provide functional supervision to and consultation with University Housing staff members responsible for the administration of the University’s conduct process.
  • Serve as a resource for students, staff, faculty, parents, and other stakeholders in regards to general conduct issues, questions, or concerns.
  • Provide outreach and education regarding the Office of Student Conduct and/or the conduct process for various faculty/staff, student, or community groups.
  • Provide oversight of the management of Office of Student Conduct budgets and accounts, which includes state-appropriated funds, University Foundation accounts, and student activity-fee funds.
  • Conduct periodic review of University conduct processes and procedures and make recommendations for revisions, maintaining compliance with University System of Georgia policies.

Duties/Responsibilities

Operations Management, Oversight & Facilitation of Conduct Process
  • Receive and review reports of alleged student misconduct and independently determine appropriate response to conduct matters, including no action, negotiating informal resolutions or facilitating formal resolutions, and work with students and student organizations toward appropriate resolution, such resolutions ranging from probation up to and including permanent separation from the University.
  • Oversee the prompt and thorough investigation of cases resolved through formal resolution and ensure that timely, comprehensive, and accurate investigative reports are prepared by the investigator.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and preside over student sexual misconduct hearings on behalf of the University, including but not limited to serving as the Hearing Officer; rendering decisions regarding procedure, admissibility of evidence, and the relevance and formatting of questions; corresponding with parties, advisors, and parents; and ensuring compliance with Title IX in conjunction with the University’s Title IX Coordinator.
  • Implement interim measures as appropriate in response to student misconduct that poses a serious danger or threat to persons or property.
  • Oversee and coordinate the Appeals process for all student misconduct and student sexual misconduct cases adjudicated via hearings before University Judiciary or Administrative panels.
  • Oversee the advisement of University Judiciary (student organization) and ensure that training (including the credit-bearing ECHD course), continuing education, and the facilitation of student-administered hearings are in compliance with University System of Georgia policies.

Additional Responsibilities & Administrative Duties
  • Serve as the Data Steward for the Office of Student Conduct, reviewing and approving access to Sensitive Institutional Data contained in the Advocate student data management system.
  • Administer and coordinate the placement of registration holds, document holds, and graduation holds on student records and initiate revocation of student degrees in compliance with University policy.
  • Administer parental notification process.
  • Know and adhere to all state and federal regulations pertaining to conduct procedures, records and reporting, including but not limited to Board of Regents policy, legislation regarding Title IX, FERPA, and Clery, and stay abreast of emerging trends and compliance issues.
  • Update, inform and consult with University administration and offices, as appropriate, regarding student conduct cases and issues.
  • Serve as liaison to the University System of Georgia regarding student conduct cases, issues, and processes.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with various departments on and off campus (e.g. University Police Department, University Housing – Residence Life, Greek Life, Athletic Association, Equal Opportunity Office, Office of Legal Affairs, University Health Center – Health Promotions, etc.).
  • Review and approve all informational material, including digital engagement, distributed by the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Participate in weekly one-one-one meetings with supervisor. Attend monthly Student Affairs Leadership Team Meetings (LT) and other Division meetings as appropriate.
  • Perform related work as required and other duties as assigned.
