Job Description

The School of Journalism seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic full-time academic advisor.

Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Provide holistic academic advising services to assigned students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans in a meeting with students on assigned caseload.
  • Introduce and refer students to opportunities that will enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
  • Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career.
  • Assist with the facilitation of new student orientation programming by presenting college information and advising students.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information, including all advising interactions. Monitor student progression in degree program to establish advising checkpoints and determine student's progress in completing degree requirements.
  • Identify and assist struggling or at-risk students including making appropriate referrals to other university resources and contacting continuing students who do not register for classes.
  • Collaborate with university partners on matters that impact student recruitment, success, and retention and support departmental and university retention initiatives.
  • This position is required to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed with advanced notice.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse constituents. Strong organizational and analytical skills. Excellent oral communication and writing skills to communicate clear, concise and grammatically correct documents, reports and correspondence.
  • Required to maintain high level of confidentiality of student records.
  • Ability to abide by the ethical standards and guidelines for academic advising. Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle high volume and an ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and internet applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Salary

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salary Range: $36,254 - $51,626 annually

Grade: GGS-008

Shift

Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed with advanced notice.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred. One or two years of experience in academic advising at the collegiate level is desirable.
