Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and the School of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) are seeking candidates for one full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor without tenure by reason of funding. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments and Associate and Full Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). We anticipate the hire to start in April 2023.

This position is paid directly by the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and receives no UW compensation.  Please refer to the VAPSHCS for information about compensation for this position.

The Chief of Staff (COS) is a member of the Senior Management team. The successful candidate is responsible for the clinical operations of VA Puget Sound Health Care system (VAPSHCS) ensuring that all applicable regulatory and accrediting body requirements for a tertiary care facility within the Department of Veterans Affairs are met. The successful candidate will support the graduate medical education programs and applied research, and the biomedical and clinical research programs in collaboration with the Associate Chief of Staff for Research. The successful candidate may have direct patient care responsibilities within their area of clinical expertise. They will be responsible for performance management and quality improvement for the clinical and administrative services while delivering high quality, cost-effective, and safe patient care while meeting or exceeding performance goals and applying the highest ethical standards.

The Chief of Staff will chair the Health Care Delivery Council and is responsible for the performance measures assigned to the Chief of Staff.  The incumbent will provide assistance on top management administrative matters affecting patient care, education, research, and organizational policy. The Chief will supervise a staff of employees to accomplish the work of the organization.  The Chief will work with multiple clinical and administrative service line leaders throughout the organization to ensure the implementation of policy, ethical decision-making, planning, systems redesign, timely budget formulations, clinical care line performance improvement, quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, cost-effective/efficient service delivery, and management of professional staff. The COS will be responsible for hospital patient flow, surgical programs to include the OR, emergency room, managing clinic access, grid management and consult management. The COS will serve in a leadership role in the Joint Executive Council developing opportunities for VA/Department of Defense collaboration. The COS will participate in establishing policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure adequate, comprehensive services. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
