Job Description

Enterprise Systems supports the Virginia Tech community by developing, coordinating, and managing application software systems and enterprise data to provide critical information services for university constituents. There are three openings: one restricted appointment and two regular appointments. As a Senior Application Analyst, you will design, develop, and document information systems independently under general direction. You will provide technical input on complex projects and serve as an expert in one or more business or functional areas.

In addition, the Senior Application Analyst will:
• Prepare detailed program specifications, identifying required inputs, coordinating the solution deployment with the user department, and ensuring satisfactory results
• Investigate user problems and needs, identify their source, and determine possible solutions
• Analyze user enhancement requests to include identifying potential problem areas and recommend optimum solution approaches
• Participate in the development, implementation, deployment, and testing of application software. Includes new functionality, enhancements, and defect resolution
• Document user requirements by learning and understanding business office practices and procedures
• Handle multiple assignments simultaneously and collaborate with colleagues
• Instruct, direct, and check the work of other technical personnel and perform quality assurance review
• Serve as a top technical expert in one or more highly specialized areas of applications systems analysis and programming

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Business, Computer Science, Finance, Information Technology, or related field
• Understanding of relational database concepts and experience working with SQL
• Demonstrated experience analyzing complex business processes and gathering requirements from non-technical users
• Demonstrated experience in full system lifecycle development including requirements gathering, systems analysis, systems development, programming, troubleshooting, testing, and implementation of large enterprise systems
• Significant customer service experience
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across internal, external organizations and virtual teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing Tier 3 application support
• Experience developing web applications that leverage a relational database
• Experience in object-oriented programming, using one or more of the following languages: Java/J2EE, Groovy, Ruby, Python, and .NET
• Experience with business processes and applications supporting higher education
• Experience working with Ellucian Banner systems
• Experience with Docker containers or managing applications in a container environment
• Experience in full stack development using languages and frameworks such as Angular, React, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML, and XML
• Experience programming using web application frameworks such as Spring, Grails, and Rails
• Experience leveraging ORM frameworks such as hibernate
• Experience with source code management
