Position Purpose

The Dartmouth Applied Learning and Innovation ( DALI ) and DIFUSE Data Science and Visualization Manager is a mentor and manager of multiple interdisciplinary and talented teams of students who are analyzing, designing, and developing interactive data visualizations. This role inspires and promotes a creative and supportive work culture for Dartmouth students and educates DALI data scientists on methods and tools for data science and visualization. The Data Science Visualization Manager oversees students on data related projects, providing appropriate and specific feedback for improvement of the project and successful outcomes for DALI partners and stakeholders. The Data Science and Visualization Manager promotes experiential learning, mindful analysis and design, and facilitates the success of many multi-disciplinary teams working on diverse projects in a collaborative startup-like environment.

Education
  • Must have at least a Bachelors’ degree in a data science-related discipline.


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Must show strong evidence of knowledge of data science and visualization and have a portfolio of work.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and best practices
  • Ability to provide guidance to others and help set direction for teams/projects.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Ability to think and act strategically and proactively.
  • Capable of presenting data science workshops clearly and effectively to both internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and interruptions.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and comfort working closely with and guiding students.
  • Successful track record leading interdisciplinary teams in data science and visualization in a fast-paced agile environment.

DALI Data Science/Visualization Track Leadership
  • Lead DALI’s data science and visualization processes and methodology.
  • Promote the data science and visualization in DALI to Dartmouth students through workshops and professional development.
  • Develop tools and resources on data visualizations for DALI teams.
  • Work with DALI leadership team to promote productive and supportive relationships with partners and other DALI stakeholders.

  • Supervise data science and visualization teams.
  • Work with students to understand data sets and craft intuitive visualizations.
  • Synthesize and communicate partner meetings related to data science.

Description

DIFUSE Data Science Module Support
  • Use a team-based approach to research and develop data visualizations for use in early undergraduate courses in the Physical and Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering. (Introductory courses in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics are under consideration.)
  • Help evaluate the quality of datasets together with the student teams.
  • Iterate on visualizations based on feedback from professors, students, principal investigators, and Dartmouth Center for Advanced Learning.
