  • Direct the research, development and day to day service operations of the Hawaiian Rare Plant Program (HRPP).
  • Conduct intensive exploratory research and strategic planning for the advancement of ex situ Hawaiian plant germplasm conservation.
  • Supervise the HRPP personnel, volunteers and students.
  • Develop/maintain cooperative relationships and agreements with other Lyon departments, various University of Hawaiʻi colleges/departments and other academic institutions, botanic institutions, government regulatory and land management agencies, conservation and local community organizations, plant conservation initiatives, and private industry.
  • Seek extramural funding through fundraising opportunities, grant writing and contracts.
  • Plan, organize and direct programmatic activities and render committee, consultative or lecturing services to civic or professional organizations. Other duties as assigned by the Lyon director.

 

 

Associate Specialist (S4) Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Botany, Plant Sciences, Biology, or a closely related field, and at least three (3) years of work experience in seed physiology and seed conservation, plant micropropagation, plant cyrogermplasm conservation, or ex-situ plant germplasm collections management. At least two (2) years of supervisory/administrative experience directly related to the plant conservation job assignments as described.
  • Ability to independently conduct research and/or major projects.
  • Knowledge and competency in ex situ germplasm conservation including: physiology, curation, processes involved in the banking of seeds and living plants/plant tissue (in vitro and cryopreserved), propagation, and germination techniques.
  • Experience in managing Threatened and Endangered genetic plant stocks of native plant taxa.
  • Evidence of research productivity and peer-reviewed publication of scholarly materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, work with staff, project coodinators, administrators and faculty.
  • Experience in developing and accomplishing internal and external research  collaborations and partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding and/or grantsmanship.
  • Demonstrated ability to confer information through interactions and communication.

Specialist (S5) Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) additional year of work experience that includes supervisory/administrative responsibilities. Ability to independently carry out major projects important to the Lyon HRPP and the University of Hawaiʻi.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the flora of the tropical and semi-tropical Pacific regions, preferably  knowledge of the native Hawaiian flora.
  • Experience in tropical ecosystems as it pertains to island biomes.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of applicable international, federal, and state laws, rules, regulations and administrative processes of threatened and endangered plant taxa.
  • Supervising independent student study/research activities.
  • Ability to work in an ethnically rich, multicultural environment
