Job Description
Director of Communications, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine||The Director serves as an administrative faculty member of the Office of University Relations within the Advancement Division of Virginia Tech, with the assignment of developing, planning, executing, and evaluating a comprehensive communications program for the Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine.||The Director reports jointly to the Senior Director for Media Outreach in the Office of University Relations and the Dean of the School of Medicine. The Director leads a four-person team that works collaboratively with colleagues from the VTC School of Medicine, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, and University Relations to plan and direct a comprehensive communications program for the VTC School of Medicine. The communications program will include message alignment with the university, supplying subject matter expertise and using consistent Virginia Tech language when communicating about the university and working collaboratively to coordinate media and campus communications.| |The Director will ensure that all communications are informational and promotional, using a variety of media to creatively build programmatic constituent support in both the public and private sector, including feeding content to Virginia Tech's communications vehicle, and will work with Advancement colleagues inside the School of Medicine to achieve Advancement goals. The Director will also attend University Relations and Advancement meetings and trainings. The position is based at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke. Flex/hybrid work options will be considered but the position does require a regular on-campus presence.
Required Qualifications
Strong record of significantly expansive and comprehensive communications program responsibility in a senior capacity.| Demonstrated strong writing, editing, leadership, and interpersonal skills.| Familiarity with modern medical teaching techniques and comfortable communicating approaches to and advances in evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary and interprofessional teamwork, chronic disease management, wellness and prevention, and public health in a medical school environment. | Fully understand a range of communications principles including graphic design, visual communications, branding, marketing, advertising, electronic communications, and social networking.| Ability to be self motivated and capable of working in a complex matrix management environment.| Significant prior communications experience writing and producing publications, pitching and developing news stories, working with medical professionals, and leading broad based communications programs for large institutions.| Advanced degree in communications, journalism, or related field; or, bachelor's degree and significant experience in a senior communications capacity.|
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in working in a medical school or hospital and with physicians, medical educators and other health care professionals. | Supervisory experience
