Electrical Engineer (Senior Engineer) - Department of Architectural/Engineering Services - Division

Position Summary

Responsible for highly technical, professional electrical engineering services which include: major planning and development for repair, modification, and replacement of the University’s electrical systems. Execute assignments and special projects, some with unusual difficulty which require engineering with a high degree of experience, knowledge and skills for planning, analysis, design, preparation of electrical design documents, detailed estimates, and the coordination and administration of major electrical/construction projects.

The individual in this position in consultation with the Director of A/E Services will determine work priorities and methods. This position requires a knowledge and working capability in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Autodesk Revit (Building Information Modeling), AutoCAD, (Computer Aided Drawing), Adobe, BlueBeam, building energy modeling programs and other computer aided drawing/analysis programs. The individual will also be responsible for grant writing when opportunities arise in consultation with the Director of A/E Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Priorities are established in consultation with the Director of A/E Services, although priorities for certain projects may be determined by other considerations, including time constraints, funding limitations and University priorities. Priorities established by the Director of A/E Services will take precedence.

Reference guidelines for job performance are based on standard electrical engineering practices, high professional ethics, engineering reference materials, manufacturer’s published data, estimating manuals, applicable code books and code analysis handbooks. In addition, the Director of Architectural/Engineering Services and other professional staff members are available as resources.

The tasks for this position are generated by the need to provide reliable code compliant electrical services for the University. The individual in this position affects all buildings and personnel on campus. This individual will maintain a close working relationship with the Physical Plant Director and Electrical Foreman, procurement specialists, end user building occupants, and related positions to effectively coordinate a comprehensive strategy for managing campus electrical systems.

30% -
Planning and development for campus wide electrical system repair, improvement and replacement projects.

Establish and maintain long and short range planning for electrical systems, distribution, and related building electrical equipment repair and improvements. Collect and analyze statistical data and prepare recommendations for prioritized repairs, alterations to, or expansion electrical equipment of the institution.

Assist in managing and updating NIU construction standards specific to electrical specifications and other related specifications.

Reference material and guidelines include the “National Electrical Code, International Building Code, NFPA Life Safety Code and NIU Electrical Construction Standards. The Director and assistant directors of Physical Plant, and other professional staff members also serve as resources.

Management of and assistance with projects prepared by outside consultants.

Meet with departments and building committees, consulting architects and appropriate agencies to assist in developing project scopes, review layouts, concepts, time schedules, and budgets.

Review plans and specifications at various stages of progress. Monitor program compliance and observe ongoing construction and quality of work. Review and give concurrence in approval of payment requests. Review change orders and make recommendations for disposition. Prepare and follow through on punch lists and closeout documentation.

Provide guidance to Physical Plant Electrical Foreman and Electrical Shop with coordination and completion of various types of repair and maintenance work orders. Review shop drawings for electrical projects and arrange for review of shop drawings by other departmental and Physical Plant personnel.

Management of and assistance with projects prepared by NIU staff.

Meet with departmental representatives and building committees to establish project scopes. Assist in developing and preparing projects with multiple disciplines. Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates in support of repair and improvement projects and/or replacement of equipment. Perform electrical code reviews. Monitor and observe construction for design/contract requirement compliance, including the preparation and review of change orders, review and processing of progress payment applications, preparation of punch lists and project closeout oversight. Perform as or assist project manager for overall coordination, scheduling and expenditure control of projects.

5% -
Serve as a member or chair of construction committees, as required, to make engineering recommendations during the development of construction program statements and selection of outside architectural and engineering firms for construction projects. Participant in Physical Plant Safety Committee to assist in reviewing concerns raised related to electrical systems, etc. as they arise.

Perform other miscellaneous, related duties as assigned.

Physical demands/requirements

Requires ability to inspect construction sites, climb ladders, and traverse rough terrain and unfinished construction to access building areas and systems for assessment and inspection.
