The Department of Education at the University of Michigan – Dearborn invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of secondary (middle and/or high school) education with teaching experience and research expertise. The anticipated start date is August 28, 2023. The position includes responsibility for teaching (online, face to face, or hybrid), research, and service. The salary range is $64,500 - $65,790.
The position requires an earned doctorate in teacher education or curriculum and instruction specializing in middle and/or secondary education or a closely related field. Candidates who are ABD with a dissertation defense by August, 2023 will be considered. It is expected that the candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: ELA, math, science, or social studies. The ability to teach across more than one of these disciplines is strongly preferred. Successful candidates should have a well-articulated research agenda. A minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience, or equivalent, in middle and/or secondary settings is preferred.
The successful applicant will join faculty, students, and community partners working in the existing teacher preparation program. Candidates will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department of Education in our secondary education program, masters programs, and doctoral programs. The successful applicant will teach courses from cross-disciplinary methods and clinical experiences for curriculum, instruction, and assessment; adolescent development; or classroom management. Additional teaching opportunities may include courses in school community partnership, metropolitan education, subject-specific methods courses, differentiated instruction, research methods courses, and supervision of clinical experiences. Other responsibilities will include student advisement, service on college/university committees and professional organizations, and collaborative work with faculty and 5–12 school colleagues in the culturally diverse communities of southeast Michigan.
The successful applicant will be expected to have strong research skills leading to scholarly publications and to seek external funds to support research activities. Potential lines of scholarship include (but are not limited to) examinations of:
educator preparation and professional development;
the development of teachers’ professional identity;
how practices in 5–12 settings can promote educational experiences that build on the social, cultural, and ecological assets of a community to empower students and their families;
the role of stakeholders in promoting systems that center students’ and families’ funds of knowledge in ways that promote culturally sustaining pedagogies;
understanding and addressing impacts of social and cultural disruptions on students’ academic and socioemotional outcomes;
practices (at the district, school, or classroom levels) that disrupt the production of educational inequalities with respect to race, economic disadvantage, language status, disability, or other factors in producing educational inequalities; or
leveraging interdependencies of schools, city systems, and agencies (e.g., health, justice, housing) to improve youth development and well-being.
Earned doctorate or ABD with a dissertation defense by August, 2023 in teacher education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field with an emphasis in middle or secondary education;
Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: ELA, math, science, or social studies;
Established record of scholarship or the potential to establish a research agenda leading to scholarly publications;
Experience in teaching in a culturally and linguistically diverse setting;
Ability to utilize technology to support teaching and to teach online courses;
Commitment to metropolitan and school/community engagement; and
Excellent oral and written skills.
- Teacher certification in one or more of the following areas: ELA, math, science, or social studies;
Evidence of at least 3-5 years of teaching experience, or the equivalent, in middle and/or secondary settings;
Experience teaching in a variety of formats, including online, hybrid, and face to face;
Experience teaching at the university level;
Ability to direct Ed.D. dissertation research;
Experience working with a variety of constituencies, including administrators, teachers, and community partners;
Experience supervising students’ clinical placements;
Experience teaching and mentoring students seeking secondary teaching certificates through the Michigan Department of Education;
Commitment to cultivate trusting partnerships that support the recruitment and development of secondary educators at the school, district, and community levels; and
Ability to co-construct a research agenda with district partners and other stakeholders focused on engaged scholarship and service that includes mentoring and training future educators.
