Scope of Job:
The successful candidate will perform the duties of Director Clinical Education reporting to the Dean of School of Podiatric Medicine (SOPM). Primary responsibilities are to provide leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the clinical educational programs for the SOPM. Be responsible for providing oversight, review, coordination, and planning for the school as it relates to all four years (clerkship, externships and residency phases) of the undergraduate podiatric medical curriculum development and implementation, faculty selection and supervision, and educational administration ensuring quality and effectiveness throughout the academic mission. The candidate should be able to work with the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine faculty to ensure that curriculum is aligned with and achieving desired clinical goals. Provide oversight for development of clinical curricula including clinical skills and instructional delivery. Provide leadership in development, support, and implementation of the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine's instructional program and services leading to academic success of all students. Establish a vision that supports the mission and strategy of the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine, providing strategic and tactical leadership to ensure the school will be viewed nationally as a model in podiatric medicine. Integrate clinical sciences all phases of instruction to ensure both vertical and horizontal integration of the curriculum. Work in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to integrate interprofessional education into the curriculum design. Perform special assignments as requested by the Dean.

  • Oversees the daily operations of the clinical clerkship curriculum, which includes liaising closely with administrative staff, faculty and leadership to ensure timely and cohesive delivery of the curriculum.
  • Assists in the design, delivery and management of the UME clinical clerkship curriculum in alignment with CPME standards.
  • Works closely with faculty and curriculum leadership to co-create, implement and assess curricular innovations.
  • Oversees all aspects related to the evaluation of the clinical clerkship curriculum including student, faculty, resident and site evaluations in collaboration with the Office of Evaluation, and Assessment
  • Identifies, supports, supervises and evaluates Clerkship Directors and clinical educators participating in the clerkship education.
  • Continuously appraises the efficacy of the clerkship curriculum in terms of attainment of competencies, appropriateness of sequencing, adequacy of content, pedagogical methods, etc. in order to promote meaningful curricular renewal.
  • Recommends and implements high-impact, evidence-informed curricular changes to restructure components of the current curriculum and responds to concerns or suggestions from students, faculty and staff.
  • Partners with clerkship directors and clinical faculty to implement revisions and updates to clinical curriculum.
  • Recommends revisions and the development of clinical rotation course offerings for MS years 3-4.
  • Identifies, recruits, and develops clinical training sites for third- and fourth-year rotations.
  • In collaboration with Academic Affairs staff managers, supervises clinical education clerkship coordinators to ensure student rotation scheduling, clerkship curricular requirements, and daily job duties have been met and provides input into annual performance evaluation.
  • Works collaboratively with affiliated clinical sites in the utilization of shared resources, faculty and administrative expertise to ensure an optimal learning environment for clerkship students.
  • Acts as main point of contact for students, faculty and administrators for all issues related to the clinical clerkship curriculum.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, monitors and addresses academic or disciplinary problems arising with third- and fourth-year medical students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Two (2) years of experience in medicine-related field or experience directly related to the stated duties.

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
    Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from an accredited university.

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
    require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
    performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
    and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
    §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
    Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
    135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
    Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
    and at least 135 days in length.
