Basic Function:
The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director of Development Programs and is a member of the University Advancement Team responsible for developing, planning and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies and activities in pursuit of securing financial contributions from a portfolio of major gift prospects, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship in support of the university's strategic fundraising priorities.

Representative Duties:
  • Develop and implement an annual fundraising strategy and plan for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major and planned gifts. E
  • Collaborate with the Director of Prospect Research to identify major and planned gift prospects. E
  • Manage assigned portfolio and timeline for each prospect to include cultivation, involvement, solicitation, and appropriate acknowledgement. Maintain a timetable, checklist and moves management system. E
  • Prepare and participate in collaborative reporting sessions with Advancement staff team members, the President, and key volunteers to keep attention focused on the progress of major and planned gift efforts and progress. E
  • Work independently and also collaboratively with advancement departments, university leadership and other university divisions and staff in creating and implementing strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and financial support. E
  • Research data for proposal development. Develop, prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects. E
  • Prepare, present and process gift agreements. E
  • Assume and achieve fundraising, financial and activity goals set annually. E
  • Ensure compliance with all University fundraising policies, goals and procedures, including responsibility for following all protocols for prospect and donor management established and implemented by University Advancement. E
  • Represent University Advancement at professional and university meetings, seminars and conferences for professional development and in the community. E

Knowledge Of:
  • Prospecting, cultivating and asking for gifts of $100,000-$1M+.
  • Major campaign fundraising, preferably at a university.
  • Building strong collaborative relationships across a complex organization with astuteness and agility.
  • Moves management, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and fundraising techniques.
  • Various giving instruments, including planned giving opportunities, and their benefit to individuals and charitable organizations.
  • Understanding of the workings in a Development Office in an academic setting.
  • Techniques in generating significant commitments from individual sources.
  • Political savvy and interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.

  • Work confidentially with a variety of prospects, donors and leadership volunteers.
  • Be available for evening and weekend work as needed.
  • Travel.


Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of six years’ professional fundraising experience preferably in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree.
Experience with Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising software.
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation

Licenses and Other Requirements:
Availability to work weekends and evenings.

Flexibility to travel 65%.

Physical Abilities:


Working Environment:
Office environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work; evening or variable hours. This position can be hybrid-schedule upon request and discussion.
