The primary responsibility of theAnimal Care Managerin Research Animal Resources is to ensure animal husbandry in all animals holding facilities at Johns Hopkins University and Medical Institutions is performed in a manner compatible with all humane, legal, and scientific requirements. Research Animal Resources (RAR) is a service center under the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. RAR is the Johns Hopkins central support service for animal procurement, housing, clinical care, and veterinary research support. The Animal Care Manager is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day animal husbandry, purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment, hiring, training, scheduling, and overseeing the animal care technicians.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all staff in the Research Animal Resources cage wash and animal care areas in Ross and Miller Research Buildings, and assist with Wilmer Wood, School of Public Health, Homewood Campus, and Bayview Campus locations.
  • Ensure that the sanitation and environmental features of the facilities are being maintained in compliance with AAALAC guidelines and institutional/scientific needs.
  • Maintain the facility to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal, and local animal welfare laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the performance of all assigned RAR personnel, including area supervisors and animal care technicians.
  • Assist in hiring, training, managing, and disciplining Animal Care Technicians and Animal Care Supervisors. This responsibility includes coordination with Human Resources and Union representatives when appropriate. At times this may also include testifying at Unemployment Compensation Claims hearings.
  • Assist in the development, scheduling, and implementing appropriate AALAS training programs for Animal Care Technicians.
  • Responsible for performance and annual review of assigned employees and assists the Director of Laboratory Animal Management and Sr. Animal Care Manager in evaluating annual performance of other employees that may not follow under his/her responsibility.
  • Oversee that all feed, bedding, and other supplies needed for Research Animal Resources operation are ordered on a timely basis.
  • Be proactive in suggesting changes to improve the efficiency and quality of the Research Animal Resources Department operations.
  • Assist Sr. Animal Care Manager in creating and updating standard operating procedures, on-the-job training, and orientation for the staff
  • Work closely with the Director of Laboratory Animal Management to strategize and problem-solve.
  • Work closely with the Director of Laboratory Animal Management to prepare internal training for supervisors and animal care technicians.
  • Oversee inventory and ensure supplies and caging are on hand to meet the needs of the animal care area.
  • Assist in overseeing the daily/weekly/monthly cage washing logs and provides written reports and analysis of cage washing activities to the Director of Research Animal Resources
  • Assist Sr. Animal Care Manager in establishing and overseeing equipment preventive maintenance schedules. Ensures that preventative maintenance is adequately performed according to plan.
  • Interprets and communicates standard operating procedures to the staff and holds staff accountable for following standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in designing and carrying out on-the-job training and orientation for animal care attendants.
  • Knowledge of cage washing standard operating procedures and able to perform the duties of all staff working under his/her supervision
  • Ensure that all Research Animal Resources equipment is functional and appropriately maintained. Assure all records pertaining to equipment are documented and stored.
  • Recommend and consult the Director of Laboratory Animal Management on equipment purchase and repair, facility improvements, management practices, etc.
  • Assist Sr. Animal Care Manager with meeting representatives of outside vendors; evaluate new products for use in animal housing facilities.
  • Assist Sr. Animal Care Manager and the Director of Laboratory Animal Management in developing the animal husbandry budget and monitoring expenditures for personnel, overtime, supplies, equipment, maintenance, etc.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to interact with research investigators and staff on animal care and housing questions.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of legal requirements and guidelines pertaining to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal, and local animal welfare laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of cage washing standard operating procedures and able to perform the duties of all staff working under his/her supervision.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry or Biology.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience and additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
