We are seeking an Animal Care Supervisor who will direct the daily operation of animal care areas according to standard operating procedures to ensure a quality animal care program to support research and teaching at Johns Hopkins University. Directs the activities of two or more full-time staff with authority to evaluate performance, discipline and recommend termination.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains the animal facility, cage wash area and loading dock to meet the standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal and local animal welfare laws and regulations.
  • Develops and implements schedules for equipment maintenance, cage changing and sanitizing equipment, rooms and corridors.
  • Orders feed, bedding and supplies and maintains sufficient inventories to meet the needs of the animal care area, cage wash area and loading dock.
  • Interprets and communicates standard operating procedures to the staff and holds staff accountable for following standard operating procedures.
  • Suggests changes to improve the efficiency and quality of animal care. Identifies problems and develops and implements solutions.
  • Suggests changes to improve the efficiency and quality of the cage wash area and loading dock. Identifies problems and develops and implements solutions.
  • Collects and maintains weekly and monthly animal census records.
  • Plans and coordinates the activities of the staff. Schedules the unit's work after consulting with the Animal Services manager and takes responsibility for its completion.
  • Conducts on-the-job training and orientation for new staff. Participates in training sessions both as a student and teacher.
  • Evaluates the performance of the staff. Takes corrective action if standard policies are not being followed.
  • Has knowledge of animal husbandry and the ability to perform the duties of all staff working under supervision.
  • Has knowledge of animal cage wash and the ability to perform the duties of all staff working under supervision.
  • Has knowledge of loading dock procedures and the ability to perform the duties of all staff working under supervision.
  • Monitors the health status of research animals and arranges for veterinary care if needed.
  • Performs routine procedures including bleeding, anesthesia, restraint, euthanasia, vaccination, etc.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including rotating weekends and holidays.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Supervisory skills, leadership ability, knowledge of personnel management and animal facility operation.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level must be achieved within 15 months of employment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Three years' experience in an animal research facility.
  • This position does not allow for education or experience substitutions.


Preferred Qualifications
  • BS or AA degree in animal science.
  • Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
