The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) is searching for a vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer (VP/CFO). Reporting directly to the president, the VP/CFO will oversee all aspects of finance and administration for an organization comprising a non-profit parent company (SFCM) and three corporate subsidiaries: Opus 3 Artists in New York and Berlin, Askonas Holt in London, and Pentatone in the Netherlands. These companies specialize in artist management and classical recording, respectively. The VP/CFO is a strategic leader and manager and a collegial partner who retains the capacity to oversee a mission-driven business on a global scale. The successful candidate will retain a broad and exceptional knowledge of finance, enjoy developing and implementing intricate financial models, and most importantly be a strong communicator who builds and invests trust throughout the organization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the president and serving as a key strategic partner on the school's leadership team, the VP/CFO will lead and continue to develop a robust administrative structure to support SFCM's evolving and expanding mission, provide guidance to the president and board on the strategic application of resources, and seek to maximize the full potential of SFCM's many assets, including the Bowes Center for Performing Arts.


The VP/CFO will manage the budgeting process and continually develop, revise, and maintain a robust financial model informed by the short-term and long-term priorities of SFCM, which will inform decisions by the organization. The incumbent will regularly engage with the leadership of SFCM's Board of Trustees and coordinate the work of the Finance, Investment, Audit, and Business and Corporate Alliances Committees.


In addition to supervising SFCM's controller, who oversees the work of the Finance Department (accounts payable, accounts receivable, student billing, and payroll), the VP/CFO supervises the director of financial aid, associate vice president of information technology, associate vice president of human resources, campus operations manager, and chief facilities engineer. He/she/they interfaces as chief financial officer with the finance personnel of each of SFCM's subsidiaries. The incumbent will ensure that the staff is well organized and that systems are in place to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.


The VP/CFO will also ensure there is adequate support for the school to meet annual financial reporting obligations and regular audits. The incumbent will also oversee the preparation of all government tax returns and other agency financial compliance reportsincluding the Form 990, Federal 5500 returns, and Fiscal Operations Reportand maintain inventory and valuation of assets, including recommendations on capital purchases.


The incumbent will ensure that timely and effective risk management programs are in place and that all insurance and compliance issues are managed thoroughly and effectively.


The VP/CFO will also undertake other duties as assigned by the president.



A minimum of seven years of demonstrated leadership experience as a CFO is required, with a clear history of achievements that illustrate exceptional financial management, team building, and strategic thinking, including:

  • Excellent supervisory skills with an ability to mentor and develop a highly effective team and delegate tasks
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees
  • Excellent analytical and planning skills and the ability to convey complex financial issues in a clear and accurate manner
  • An MBA or CPA is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and ability to apply GAAP to analyze accounts and perform account reconciliations

The anticipated starting base annual salary range for this position is between $270,000 and $350,000, depending on experience. Benefits included with this position are:
