Senior Animal Facilities Technician

Haverford College invites applications to our full-time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt, benefits-eligible Senior Animal Facilities Technician opportunity.

The Senior Technician will support both the fish facility, housed in the Biology department, and the rodent vivarium, housed in the Psychology department. Key duties will include maintaining the day-to-day operations of both facilities, including animal husbandry, assisting with supervision of student workers, interfacing with the Facilities department, troubleshooting maintenance problems, and contributing to the on-call responsibilities that are necessarily involved with facilities that house live animals year-round.

Primary Responsibilities

For the Biology Department fish facility (50%):
  • Breed/raise zebrafish and assess fish characteristics for stock maintenance
  • Train and manage the schedule of student employees
  • Regular maintenance and upkeep of fish facility and equipment
  • Manage logs and procedures to maintain regulatory compliance
  • Share in on-call responsibilities
For the Psychology Department rodent vivarium (50%):
  • Assist with the management and complex needs of inventory preparation with up to three different rodent species, including running extra cage wash shifts and hand-washing equipment, when needed
  • Assist with record keeping of in-use items
  • Regular upkeep of the vivarium spaces (sweeping, mopping, sanitizing)
  • Working directly with Facilities for equipment and facility upkeep and repairs
  • Assist with maintenance and appropriate disposal of animal waste and biohazardous materials
  • Assist with managing, ordering, and/or scheduling experiment-driven animal and equipment needs
  • Share in on-call responsibilities

Line of Report

This position reports both to Dr. Roshan Jain, Associate Professor of Biology, and to the Vivarium Manager in Psychology.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with animals in some capacity, or demonstrated potential to work in an animal research setting
  • Background that indicates familiarity with scientific concepts and principles, or a willingness to learn scientific concepts and principles
  • Note that a Bachelor’s degree is not required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with facilities/equipment troubleshooting

  • Kneeling (to maintain upper body in erect position while resting knees on ground): Up to 3 hours
  • Climbing (to ascend or descent heights using ladders, scaffolding, stairs, poles, inclined surfaces): Up to 3 hours
  • Twisting (to rotate upper body while feet remain stationary): Up to 3 hours
  • Driving (operating a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, forklift, etc.): Never
  • Exposure Limitation (i.e., cold water, dust, gas, fumes, extreme temperatures): Up to 3 hours
  • Other: Rodent and Fish handling: 3-6 hours
