Position: POLICE OFFICER

Department: CAMPUS POLICE

Division: FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION

Responsibilities: Performs general law enforcement duties including patrolling campus, checking property, conducting room searches, maintaining order, and public safety. Issues traffic and parking citations; apprehends, questions, and arrests suspects; collects and preserves evidence; conducts investigations; responds to and assists in all medical emergencies; assists in conducting fire drills and evacuating buildings; provides security escorts for personnel, and chauffeurs division heads and visitors as requested. Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars; maintains the required level of proficiency in the use of firearms. In addition, Campus Police Officers perform other duties as required to meet organizational needs.

Qualifications: A high school diploma or the equivalent and NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.) certification are required for sworn positions. Out-of-state officers with a minimum of two (2) years of active duty are eligible for a lateral transfer; officers with under two (2) years of experience can be hired as security officers with an increase in pay from the basic security position. A bachelor’s degree and previous law enforcement experience are helpful. Candidates must possess a valid state driver’s license and have a driving record that meets the requirements of the University Risk Management Policy. Candidates must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered. Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.

Physical Qualifications: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including firearms, automobiles, radio, telephone, etc. Must be able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and a minimal amount of force frequently or constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Candidates must be physically fit, able to remain on their feet for long periods and able to defend themselves and others from attack or physical assault. Drug Testing is required.

Finalists for this position are subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
