The Department of English at Marshall University invites applications for a nine-month tenure-eligible Assistant Professor of English with a specialization in Appalachian literature, beginning August 2023. We are interested in a candidate who could contribute to one or more of the following secondary areas: digital humanities, international/multicultural literature, film/new media, professional/technical writing, English education, medieval literature, and disability studies. Teaching experience and evidence of publication or scholarly potential required, as well as Ph.D. in English (or related field) in hand by time of appointment.

Duties will include a full-time teaching load of 12 hours per semester, in addition to advising, participation in scholarship and/or creative activities, service, and other duties as designated by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and/or Chair of the Department of English.

We seek a candidate who will contribute to the English Department curriculum through the courses required of most majors (ENG 350, 355, and 499). The department also seeks a candidate who will contribute to the University’s general education curriculum and its emphasis on using high-impact teaching practices, particularly those affiliated with one (or more) of the institution’s pedagogical initiatives (e.g., Community-based Learning, Critical Thinking, First Year Seminar, Writing Across Curriculum, etc.). Additionally, the ideal candidate will contribute to the College’s support of interdisciplinary programs of study.

The search committee requests that applicants submit a letter of application, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a current CV to Marshall University’s PeopleAdmin system. (Additional documents will be requested later from applicants invited to video-screening interviews and interviews on campus.)

Completed electronic applications received by March 6, 2023, will receive priority consideration.

Marshall University is an AA/EOE institution committed to developing a diverse faculty and staff.

Candidates interviewing on campus must have unofficial transcripts (undergraduate & graduate) forwarded directly to the department chair by their degree-granting institutions, prior to an on-campus interview.
