Organizational Unit Overview
ECU has served North Carolina for 113 years and is currently the only public university in the state with a dental school, medical school, and college of engineering. ECU is a research-intensive university which offers 87 undergraduate degrees, 69 master’s degrees, 13 research doctoral degrees, 5 professional doctoral degrees, 2 intermediate/specialist programs, and 89 departmental certificates. There are 133 degree and certificate programs approved for online delivery. There is a student population of approximately 28,000, including undergraduate students, graduate and doctoral students, and medical students. The College of Education is housed at East Carolina University. The mission of the College of Education is the preparation of professional educators and allied practitioners, including professionals in counseling, adult education, instructional technology, and librarianship. Significant to this mission is a strong commitment to three related areas, all of which are realized through partnerships and other endeavors. These areas are: (1) the encouragement and nurturing of professional growth for educators and allied practitioners at all levels and in all areas of the education endeavor; (2) a continuing emphasis on and support for scholarship and research/creative activity; and (3) service in all areas of professional education. Critical to such commitment is the promotion of effective teaching; staff participation in the improvement of schools; and, in concert with other state agencies, the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina.

The Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education (MSITE) is one of 6 instructional departments within the College of Education. MSITE offers Mathematics Education and Science Education programs at the undergraduate level and Mathematics Education, Science Education, and Instructional Technology programs at the graduate level. The College of Education at East Carolina University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics Education, Science Education and Instructional Technology Education. This is a full-time 12-month position. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative academic leader with exemplary leadership, administrative, personnel management, and supervisory skills. Responsibilities include facilitating the development and attainment of departmental goals with a clear vision for the Department’s future. Those responsibilities include but are not limited to: decision-making; negotiating teaching assignments, research, and service loads for faculty; managing and evaluating faculty and staff; providing leadership to the success of established collaborative partnerships; using innovative foresight to establish new partnership opportunities; collaborating with faculty within the department and across the college and university regarding curricular and related programmatic matters; building cultural proficiency and leading anti-discriminatory practices; managing budgets; involved in the hiring process of faculty and staff; and advocating for the department within the college.

Minimum Education/Experience  
The candidate must possess a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Instructional Technology or closely related fields and have the current rank of Professor or Associate Professor. Rank will be commensurate with education and experiences. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire. The candidate must demonstrate evidence of skills/experience/training in diversity, inclusion, and equity. Leadership experience in higher education, including evidence of organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Experience teaching Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Instructional Technology or closely related courses.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education    
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and overseeing undergraduate and Master’s degree programs in Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Instructional Technology or closely related disciplines; an understanding of the current landscape of teacher licensure given several department programs satisfy professional licensure requirements; university collaborative efforts with public schools, community colleges, and community; external grants for research and program development; management of resources for programs, partnerships, scholarships, initiatives, impacts, and regional transformation; integration of technology in the instructional process; experience leading or managing faculty (fixed term, part time, tenure-track, tenured), staff, and students in the areas of Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Instructional Technology; experience mentoring junior and senior faculty with research initiatives as well as guidance related to promotion and tenure policies and procedures; experience with the CAEP accreditation process; and modeling anti-racism in education curriculum, teaching practices, research, and/or service to our constituents. Current Associate Professors should be qualified to submit a tenure and promotion packet for Full Professor upon hire.
