The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) seeks a dynamic, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADDEI) will work closely with their colleagues across the school and with the university's Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer to nurture a fair, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist culture for the Institute's diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.

The Assistant Dean will provide strategic vision and leadership to advance the school's mission to forge diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities, cultures, and climates on our Washington, D.C., Bologna, Italy, and Nanjing, China campuses. This individual will work with

the Dean and school leadership to create a strategic plan and policies that produce measurable goals and outcomes that reflect standards of excellence in recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and students; in supporting students' academic success, and in identifying and addressing barriers to opportunity and inclusion.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The ADDEI will collaborate with leaders across the university, in concert with leadership in the Deans office, to support the broader institutional mission and goals.
  • The candidate will bring passion, skills, and visionary leadership to advance the school's efforts in creating and sustaining a culture that embraces and promotes diversity and inclusion in its broadest meanings.
  • The position reports to the Dean of SAIS, Johns Hopkins.
  • Work collaboratively to provide strategic direction, operational oversight and guidance for the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion plan in alignment with the school's strategic plan and the university's Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Represent SAIS on the JHU Diversity Leadership Council (DLC).
  • Consult with the Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs and the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Director of Human Resources to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity related to hiring and retention of faculty and staff.
  • Identify, develop, foster, and maintain active partnerships with school and university affinity groups.
  • Support faculty and staff development programs focused on creating and assessing social justice, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and diverse classrooms.
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs and the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs to promote diversity and inclusion among faculty and leadership.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean of Global Recruitment and Enrollment, department chairs, and academic program staff to ensure the application of a holistic admissions process and monitoring of diversity and inclusion strategies.
  • Support the delivery of individual and organizational needs assessments, including consideration of institutional climate surveys, in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion related to the school's strategic plan.
  • Provide expertise in interpreting data measuring the school's efforts to support a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Meet one-on-one and in groups with students to address issues of concern and serve as a resource for faculty and staff on issues related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Serve as liaison to the JHU Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Office of Institutional Equity on complaint resolutions.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required.
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible diversity and inclusion-related management experience in a healthcare and or academic environment is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, analyze data and think systematically from both a detailed and a strategic perspective.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership in designing and implementing DEI strategic initiatives, measurement, and reporting performance, with a demonstrated record of success in moving the needle within prior organizations related to DEI metrics regarding faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating training programs for students, faculty, and staff on issues related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Desire to grow, learn and contribute to a team.
  • Ability to build consensus and trust.

Starting Salary Range: $140,000 - $160,000 (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
