The Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University invites exceptional applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Professor of the Practice.
The Burnes Center has a mission to advance real-world impact by teaching individuals and institutions the skills needed to design and implement innovative and equitable solutions to society's hardest problems. In the process, we are building a new field of social impact that leverages data, technology and community wisdom and the power of institutions to enable systems-level change in practice. The Burnes Center has faculty and staff with appointments across many of Northeastern's colleges, departments, programs, and centers. Strong candidates will have a distinguished professional record with extensive expertise in the field of social change and social impact and a commitment to working toward the amelioration of real-world problems. The Professor of the Practice opportunity will be a faculty appointment in one of the colleges and schools at Northeastern University with a faculty affiliate appointment at the Burnes Center.
A demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, coaching, and mentorship of social innovators across sectors and established capacity for developing partnerships to advance social change and impact are highly prized. Successful candidates will teach courses and workshops that align with individual strengths for the audiences the Center serves, including programs for global social innovators, public servants in the United States and abroad, business and community leaders, Northeastern faculty and students. The Professor of the Practice faculty hired will also teach relevant graduate and/or undergraduate courses in the colleges in which they are appointed.
Teaching across multiple modalities, including on-ground, online, and hybrid, will be expected. Candidates will also contribute to and develop co-curricular programming and opportunities for Burnes Center audiences, such as hackathons, accelerators, studios, and other programs designed to advance social change.
In addition, the Burnes Center engages in high-impact projects designed to address inequities in education, promote worker power and economic justice, strengthen participatory democracy, mitigate climate change, advance racial justice and solve real-world problems. All of this work is done in close collaboration with faculty partners at Northeastern University along with community, philanthropic and government leaders.
Therefore, successful candidates will, in addition to teaching, have high-impact project(s) they are passionate about pursuing that are designed to yield implementation of solutions to real world problems. The successful candidate should be interested in launching their own projects and contributing to the Center's existing projects and/or teaching.
The Center is especially interested in candidates working to improve public education, strengthen democracy, address climate change and planetary well-being, and improve racial injustice and racial equity. Focus areas may be domestic or international.
Successful candidates can come from diverse backgrounds and fields of expertise and who pursue different pathways to impact, such as: civic tech, social innovation, collective intelligence and open innovation, democratic engagement, management, information design/data visualization, data science/analytics for social good, public administration, public interest law, public policy or open government, health care, population health, engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning, citizen science, organizational behavior, urban planning, design or architecture, communications and communications technology, new media, media advocacy, journalism, behavioral sciences, or another approach designed to accelerate and help institutions and communities to tackle real world problems and achieve social impact, especially using new technology, data or new social science methods.
We are also looking for candidates who are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and leading new projects.
Because this is an interdisciplinary position announcement, in addition to an appointment as a Faculty Affiliate at the Burnes Center for Social Change, the successful faculty member(s) primary appointment will be appointed to the Department(s) and College(s) at Northeastern University that best fit with their background. The college/school in which the faculty will be appointed will be determined at the time of hire along with teaching obligations for the college.
A PhD or an equivalent terminal degree, or equivalent professional experience as well as at least five years of work experience are sought. Excellent written, oral and/or visual communication skills and proven teaching proficiency are expected. Familiarity with online teaching is beneficial. Prior leadership or potential for leadership in developing partnerships as well as a well-developed network across sectors in the relevant field are desirable.
Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education. The position will support the university's commitment to innovation and inclusion in teaching and the commitment to social justice and racial justice through interdisciplinary transformative thinking and problem solving on issues of pressing concern to society at local, state, national, and international level.
Anticipated start date for faculty appointments is fall 2023.
