DAY IN THE LIFE
As a Communications Specialist III in the Division of Marketing and Communications at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, you will provide strategic communication services to the university's academic colleges and institutes to showcase the best and brightest that TAMU-CC has to offer to both internal and external audiences.


Your day will include a variety of writing and editing assignments, including feature articles, media alerts, news releases, and scripts. You will use the university's content management system to upload your stories for the world to see.


The Communications Specialist III will work collaboratively with others in the division including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, social media managers, web developers, and the marketing team. The Communication Specialist III is also responsible for fostering good working relationships with on and off-campus partners with the goal of generating the most impactful content. This position works closely with local, state, and national news agencies to pitch stories and facilitate interviews. A person in this position will also mentor and manage communications interns.



RESPONSIBILITIES
Functional Area 1: Communications
Percent Effort: 40%
  • Coordinate and execute comprehensive campaign plans for multiple, coinciding special events, programs, and announcements.
  • Research, write, and edit copy.
  • Compose, proof, edit, and update information on university website.
  • Prepare presentations, speeches, PowerPoints, and displays.
  • Prepare University representatives for public appearances, including interviews and public speeches.
  • With guidance of the director, respond to breaking news, crisis communications needs, and internal communications.
  • Coordinate with campus videographer on video production projects, including writing scripts, production story boards, on-scene video/photography shoot assistance, and aspects of post-production.


Functional Area 2: Media Relations
Percent Effort: 40%
  • Seek opportunities to make news that generates coverage with informative, compelling stories about the University narrative, its programs, students, faculty, alumni, events, and institutional initiatives.
  • Develop relationships with media, draft and send news releases, respond to media requests, create talking points, and script.
  • Monitor communications-related analytics and focus on expanding reach and scope of media mentions.


Functional Area 3: Administrative
Percent Effort: 20%
  • Oversee interns by providing career enhancing experiences, direction and guidance, with supervision from the director of communications.
  • Ensure monthly budgets and expenditures are reconciled.
  • Comply with University policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Complete all assigned employee training courses as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of communications and/or marketing experience.
  • Additional education may be considered as a substitution for the minimum experience requirement: Master's Degree & two (2) years of experience or Doctoral Degree
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), Cision, and Basecamp.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Strong verbal and written communications skills.

WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE
  • Experience with writing about scientific topics (i.e., breaking down complicated scientific research into laymen terms, pitching scientific stories to media, working to prep scientific researchers for media interviews)
  • Four (4) or more years related experience in a university environment coordinating projects and working with multiple departments.
  • Experience with communication software such as Cision, Basecamp, and social media platforms.


SALARY: $4,195.50/monthly ($50,346/annually approximately)
