Job Summary/Basic Function:

Reporting to the Dean of Library Services in Wallace Library, the College Archivist provides student-centered instruction, reference support, and community outreach, oversees archival operations, and manages student employees in the Gebbie Archives & Special Collections. The archivist develops and implements a plan in the archives to advance library and institutional priorities. The archivist builds collections that support instruction, research, fundraising, alumni relations, and efforts related to the College’s 200th anniversary in 2034, and which represent the diversity of the Wheaton community.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Provide course-integrated instruction for students using archives, manuscripts, special collections, and unique digital materials.
  • Provide in-person and virtual research and reference support to college administration, staff, faculty, students, alumni, and visitors.
  • Provide outreach and programming to and with library and campus colleagues and local organizations about Wheaton’s history, particularly related to inclusion and belonging.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to accession, process, store, preserve, and use archives, manuscripts, and rare books in multiple formats, following professional standards.
  • Partner with Discovery & Access to identify, digitize, and describe at-risk or high-use collections.
  • Manage ArchivesSpace, Archive-It, DSpace, AWS, and Iron Mountain systems and contracts.
  • Control access to the archives and reading room.
  • Manage departmental budget.
  • Provide broad oversight for records management, with library administrative support. Update policies and records schedules so campus offices can effectively manage and transfer records.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in library science, archives and records management, or related field with a specialization or significant coursework in archives OR graduate degree in any field with demonstrated knowledge of digital archives, such as Certified Archivist status or post-graduate training.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in archives and special collections.
  • Experience teaching in an academic setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of approaches to teaching with primary source materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogies.
  • Experience providing reference interviews and consultations.
  • Experience with standard archival processing practices.
  • Experience developing or improving workflows.
  • Experience using ArchivesSpace.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn independently.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and members of the college community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to practices that foster inclusion and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Skills
  • Experience using Archive-It, DSpace, or AWS .
  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Experience with records management.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with the qualifications, education and experience.
