Position Summary

The College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, pursuant to its mission and values, invites applications for two new faculty position specializing in computational social sciences to begin August 1, 2023. This tenure-track (or tenured) position is an academic 9-month appointment. The successful candidate may be appointed at the Assistant Professor rank, commensurate with the candidate’s experience, and will maintain an academic appointment in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.

In addition to contributions to the cluster, the candidate will be expected to synergize interdisciplinary collaboration efforts within the College of Public Health, specifically the Departments of Health Promotion and Behavior, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and the Institute of Gerontology.
The faculty will advance the development and/or application of digital devices in mHealth and telehealth to facilitate the collection and creation of health-related data and data streams to inform the delivery of personalized and community-level interventions. The faculty will work to develop interventions, innovative ways to predict outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions within real-world clinical and public health settings to ensure that solutions meet real-world needs, thus increasing health equities. The faculty will offer advanced graduate training in quantitative methodology, including computational modeling, dynamic analyses, and data visualization. The candidate will advise students, direct MPH and PhD projects/theses, and conduct professional and collegiate service activities both within UGA and the community at large.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape future research directions; expand existing programs in the department; and act as a liaison with other faculty at UGA College of Public Health and UGA . Resources will be available to the new Department Head for hiring additional faculty with expertise in health promotion and behavior. The Department is located in new facilities on the UGA Health Sciences Campus.

The position is part of a campus-wide Presidential Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Initiative in Computational Social Sciences that aims to recruit a total of 50 faculty members who will educate students and advance research in data science and AI. Rather than being housed exclusively in a single department; however, the majority of UGA’s newly recruited faculty will focus on the fusion of data science, AI, and computational social sciences in cross-cutting areas such as health and medicine, biomanufacturing, infectious diseases, integrative precision agriculture, ethics, cybersecurity, resilient communities, and the environment. Specifically, the candidate for these positions should bridge research efforts between Applied Social Science Interventions for Community cluster hires across the University in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, College of Public Health, and School of Social Work.

About the College/Unit/Department

The College of Public Health was established in 2005, is comprised of four academic departments and three research institutes, and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH ). The College has approximately 65 full-time faculty and 50 staff who serve an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students per year.

The Department’s instructional programs include a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Promotion and Behavior, Master of Public Health, and health promotion doctoral program. The Department has 12 full-time tenured or tenure track faculty, three clinical faculty, and two instructors committed to instruction, research and outreach with the goal of improving the health of all. HPB faculty members have leadership roles in, and close involvement with, three interdisciplinary units of the College: Institute for Gerontology, Global Health Institute and Institute for Disaster Management. Close ties also exist with other university units including the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Social Work, the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership and UGA’s Public Service and Outreach Units.
