Position Summary

The Counseling & Testing Center ( CTC ) at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse ( UWL ) is seeking two (2) skilled Counselors who are dedicated to promoting the mental health of our students. The successful candidate(s) hired will be joining a dedicated and energetic staff at the CTC who are committed to cultural self-awareness and ongoing CTC and campus efforts to offer inclusive and accessible services to our students.

In addition to brief counseling services, our office engages in active collaboration with campus partners, develops training and programming to address student mental health needs, and engages in innovative service delivery methods to increase access to services.

One of the hires will also be given a reduced caseload and asked to perform the role of the Clinical Case Manager. This role is essential to our office, providing students with connections to resources on and off-campus and developing relationships with community partners.

At the CTC our mission is to promote students’ psychological, academic, social, and cultural growth through professional counseling services. We accomplish this by maintaining an environment grounded in our values of compassion, collaboration, inclusion, and access.
The successful candidate will:
  • function as a strong generalist conducting intake assessments, triage assessments, and professional counseling services (including individual, couples, and group) to our students.
  • have significant experience with crisis intervention and risk assessment, and other high acuity presentations.
  • be responsible for providing culturally congruent clinical services.
  • have experience in a fast-paced work environment and with the application of brief therapy models.
  • be a well-rounded professional, able to work autonomously and contribute to giving & receiving of consultation with colleagues.
  • have strong communication skills, and demonstrated proficiency in developing and maintaining campus and community relationships.
  • have interest and/or experience in leading therapy and/or skills-based groups.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and social work, approved by the WI Professional Counselor section ( MPSW 14.01 ); either currently licensed as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT or working towards one of those licenses.
  • The CTC is committed to equity and inclusion and seeks mental health clinicians who are dedicated to ongoing learning and integrating a multicultural perspective into all aspects of their work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • All post-degree supervised hours completed by start date; currently licensed as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical case management and the ability to collaborate with co-workers, departments, and community agencies.
  • Experience identifying resources with in-network and out-of-network insurance plans.
  • Experience conducting outreach programming, presentations, training, and/or workshops relevant to college students.
  • Two or more years of post-graduate clinical experience, with significant experience conducting brief therapy with emerging adults for a wide range of presenting concerns. Experience with solution-focused ( SFBT ) and other brief treatment models is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to persons identifying as a first-generation college student, low income, person of color, LGB, transgender and gender non-conforming, veteran. Preference will be given to those candidates who have experience working with culturally, racially, and diagnostically diverse college students.
  • Experience providing treatment to underserved clients, including but not limited to: male-identified adults, students of color, athletes, and veterans.
  • Experience conducting assessment and providing treatment for adults in one or more of the following areas: men and masculinity concerns, crisis management, and concerns related to neurodiversity.
  • Commitment to providing group counseling (psychoeducational/skills, support, and therapy groups).
  • Significant experience with crisis intervention and risk assessment.
  • Interest and/or experience providing clinical supervision.

Working conditions and environment

Typical office hours (7:45am-4:30pm). Evening hours may be required as we expand our services (e.g., one evening/week), with a schedule adjustment made to maintain an average of 40 hours/week onsite. While no after-hours crisis coverage is required, our clinical staff members occasionally provide evening outreach programming and may be called in for a campus crisis response.

Expectations are to provide in-person counseling services; however, if public health concerns persist, some remote services will be required.
